Stopped by my local shop today and they had a Ruger Redhawk in 45 Colt with a 5 1/2 in barrel. This gun has been on the top of my wish list for a while. I have not seen one in person before. It looks to be in excellant shape. Lockup is tight. I did not need or plan to buy a gun today, but I had to put it on layaway. $535 after tax. I am having to sell a couple of other guns to justify this, but couldn't pass it up.

I am selling my beloved Blackhawk 45lc/45acp and Single Six :( I hate to but it is worth it

Quick question for anyone that owns the Redhawk, what grips do you use? It has the smaller factory wood, which I think look the best, but I did not like the feel of them on my Security Six. I love the larger wood factory target grips that I put on my Security Six. Does anyone know if those were ever made for the Redhawk?

I have several RH's and different grips on them all. I have the Hogue Rubber Mono Grip on my 45 Colt, the Pachmayr Presentation on my 44 and the factory wood on my 41mag. I personally like them all, but find the Presentation a bit thick when trying to use the speed loaders.

Skidder, that is a good point about the grip being bigger on the Redhawk. Maybe the wood will work. They do look the best

I have a 41 mag RH and haven't seen one in 45LC in a long time. Hope you enjoy it when you get it paid for.

I saw one other Redhawk in 45 colt in a pawn shop about 3 years ago. I went home to think about it and it was gone the next day. I have been kicking myself ever since. Didn't want to make the same mistake again

Chew lucky farging bastitch. :)
I don't blame you.
I tried Rubber Hogues on my .44 Redhawk and didn't like them.
I went back with the actory wood.

Thanks for the grip tips guys. I don't know why it did not occur to me that the frame is of course bigger on the Redhawk than the Secuirty Six. I will test out the factory wood ones before I order any more.

Good news also, I sold my Blackhawk tonight and I will be at the front door when they open to get this baby out of layaway. I am so excited I am not sure I will sleep tonight :D

I saw a Redhawk in .357 mag a few weeks ago at a LGS for $700. I thought the price was high compared to the 44 mags but the owner said they are pretty rare. I dunno, not a Ruger expert, but the holes in the massive cylinder looked tiny. I bet that beast could handle some nuclear hand loads.

I have a huge redhawk in 454 casull at work, i'm not drooling over it but the more I handel it the more I want it. I have a feeling it will fire .45lc and feel like a dream:)

I've never bought a ruger revolver I could complain about!

You are correct. The 357 Redhawk is a beast.
$700 is not a bad price, I've seen them go for $900 several times.

$700 for a redhawk in .357?!? That is a downright reasonable price. That gunshop is not possibly in the central CA area?

Yeah the 357s are super rare. That seems like a good price actually

Pictured below is mine with the standard factory wood grips. I have had it maybe 15 years. For me the factory grips work fine and it is a revolver I enjoy shooting. I figure the grips used should be a matter of what you are comfortable with. The fact that factory wood works for me is really here nor there.

Enjoy it as they are a great revolver and .45 LC is a nice cartridge to load.

The .357 Redhawk was produced from 1984 to 1985 at which time Ruger had discontinued them. Only 5000 or less were produced in each of the two barrel lengths(5.5" and 7.5"). However, the .41 Redhawk continued to be produced until 1991.

Herrett's makes a a couple of grips that look like the larger grip on the Security 6. See the styles at:

I had a set of Ropers made for a RH I had and they fit my
hand as they are made to a tracing that you send in of the hand. Eagle may also make grips in the shape you want.

Thanks RugRev. Those have the look I am searching for.

As promised pics. Second picture shows the Redhawk with what appears to be to mouse guns next to a hand cannon, but they are actually my Security Six and SP101.

This Redhawk is big and beautiful.

TennJed,

Congratulations on the new baby. I put oversized rubber grips on my 357 Redhawk, 7.5" barrel stainless. (Yes, they are pretty rare.) The factory grips felt small in my big hands. The rubber grips gave more control. (I would love to have a 45 Colt Redhawk to go along with the 45 Colt Blackhawk.)

In answer to one of the commets: The 357 Redhawk can probably handle any load it is safe to put in a 357 cartridge. I've loaded up some fairly heavy bullet, high speed rounds over the years and the gun handled them well. Usually I just load medium power rounds and 38 specials for it. BTW, that massive piece shoots 38 special WCs like a dream. Feels like a popgun. :D

Congratulations on the Redhawk TennJed. When I saw your ad for the convertable Blackhawk go up I was turning over rocks looking for spare change, but couldn't come up with enough. Glad you were able to find buyers and get the one you've been wanting. Mine's not double action, but I have the old Bisley Vaquero and shoot some pretty hot loads in it from time to time. I think the Redhawk sounds even better with the adjustable sight.

I have 3 Redhawks and IIRC the 44 and 45 have Hogue Mono grips while the 357 has Pachmeyer. My SRH in 454 has the Hogue Mono grip.
