I had to stand in line to buy a pistol today!

My lgs, north suburb of Chicago, isn’t even answering their phone anymore. I was there this weekend, out of 5.56, .223, 12 and 20g ammunition. 9mm limited to 100 rounds range and 100 defense. Their glock section had 3 guns, all .22. They usually have at least one of every model. Most of what’s left is high end stuff. Cases are about a third full from what they normally carry. They require appointments to purchase guns or ammo now, no walk-ins. I was chatting with the door guy and he said it’s been absolutely crazy. Lot of first timers coming in expecting to walk out with a gun. In Illinois you need a FOID card to purchase a gun, Application wait time is running 3 months right now.

It's unusual to see a gun buying panic that's not about proposed legislation. In fact, I haven't heard a peep about gun control during this whole crisis. This could be a turning point in the gun debate. I don't think that guns, per se, are going to be a salient issue in this year's elections. And afterwards, there are going to be many more gun owners -- of all races -- with a vested interest in their guns.

Wait six or so months to a year, there will be never or little used handguns bought by panic buyers at bargain prices in firearms dealer inventories.

Has that ever actually worked out that way? I heard the same predictions in ‘08, ‘12, etc. but I never actually saw this rush of people selling their panic buys. I did see the prices of new stuff crash, mainly because the manufacturers ramped up production to meet the surge and then demand tapered off, and I saw gun stores hit their “I made my money, I’m out” mark and close (a few of them years before the actual price peak, but they were convinced a crash was just around the corner).

I just wonder how many crazy activists, which most of us don’t agree with, are buying guns. Antifa and others are not going to help social stability or our 2A cause.

Just like the 1A, the 2A is not there for people we agree with, it’s for people who will be repressed if they don’t have protections. And guess what, the people who are repressed are generally the people doing things the folks in power don’t like.

Given the current trajectory of the US, that might not actually be true....

Yeah, I'm wondering how much of that "defunding of the police" panic movement might affect that outcome. People are justifiably ticked off at that incident in Minnesota.*

Although the defunding movement sounds lemming-like, there's no accounting for mob mentality taking over and we all have to be our own cops.

Through what appear to be normal social processes "starting from scratch," we might end up being a warlord society.

* Assuming all that is "known" about it today is substantially true. Note that I avoided use of the word "alleged."

Nothing out of the ordinary going on around here. All the stupidity is in the big town (it's not that big really but they like to think it is) that's located along the Rio Grande where 1-40 and I-25 cross.

In Pocatello, Idaho, you're more likely to see a longer line for the state liquor store - which is right next door to Sportsman's Warehouse.;)
I was in one of my favorite gunstores ("Hux's" in Chubbuck, Idaho) last week too. There wasn't any line. One guy was sitting at the table in the middle of the store filling out the paperwork for a gun, and there were two or three locals standing around shooting the bull (as usual), but that's about all. I didn't find a holster for my Glock 44 though. Darn it!:(
There is a little strip center in a not nice section of Nashville with side by side, gun shop, liquor store adult book store and gas station . Get everything you need in one stop.

i went to the range this morning. on the way home, i wanted to stop at the gun store. long line there, so i said screw it, came home.

Antifa needs protection from repression?

Everyone does. But Antifa is mostly a boogeyman. It’s a justification for doing exactly the wrong thing when faced with a group with legitimate grievances.

These protests and riots wouldn’t exist if not for systematic repression of a group. Repression which started with deliberate efforts to suppress the group’s 2A rights, and extended into a militarization of police. Look up “the racist history of gun control” for a starting point, but that’s just a start.

Had to go to Walmart to get something and on the way home I stopped at Rural King to see if they had a magazine for one of my pistols.
They didn't, hardly any in stock. I posted about this store a few weeks back about how low their stock was on ammo and guns and they are even worse today. Lots of people looking at and buying guns but there is only about 1/3 of the long guns and about that much of hand guns that they normally have on hand. Stuff is really picked out. There was no pistol ammo and maybe a dozen boxes of various rifle ammo.
I'll bet the gun and ammo manufacturers are quite happy.

When Fear becomes a reality.

I have been working on all my guns. Trying to update springs etc. Getting Bug Out guns together. Inventorying ammo and buying as much as I can on a regular basis on top on what I already have. Trying to keep my shooting skills up with 22.cals and preserving the 9mm.380,38 and 357. Fortunately have a boat load of 12 ga Buckshot. Never once wanted a AR. Carried one in the Army shot it well, but cannot hunt with them where I live but times are different. The AR takes on a different meaning. Also buying more mags for all my guns. Not sure if this is the best time to buy a new Pistol. Long lines, and delays on top of having to shoot ammo supplies.
Right now the Bad guys seem to be winning and It is my belief they are just getting warmed up.

You can't hunt with a rifle in NC?

There’s boogie men everywhere but there’s more twisted numbers and lies than anything else. Lots of phrases thrown around by the BS media trying to vilify good, innocent people. There’s a lot of middle class working people feeling oppressed and vilified over the last week so there isn’t much sympathy for some of the noise makers right now. Of course dividing America has been the goal of some people for a while and they’re succeeding in some areas.

Been ready for years.:D:evil::p. Bring it on Skippy!

Like the man said up thread, 6 to 12 month and there will be bargains galore!I

I Work p/t in a lgs. No lines but busy with newbies and panickers. ( and some of them are really stupid)
One wanted a gun and bullets that would only wound, not kill. I threw him the F out.The ones I enjoy help are old ladies that live alone and want protection. Boss gives a senior discount and an hour free range instruction.( Don't tell him, I use much more than a hour and my ladies are confident and competent when they leave):neener:
Your boss is a very good guy, this is just the latest example. :)

America has been divided a long time. I think complaining about the last few weeks is kinda strange. As for twisted numbers and lies, yes, that’s a real problem. Look at the recent cases where police reported on their actions only to find that someone had a video camera that showed that every detail of their report was false.

Yep that kind of thing happens on both sides. I personally know of a case of a person lying about police brutality only to be stunned his lies were caught on the dash cam. It’s called a lack of morals.

Yep. The problem comes when one side is in a position of authority, and people say, “it’s a few bad apples,” as though they’ve never actually heard the whole of that saying: A few bad apples spoils the bunch.

The reality is that a certain percentage of gun buyers are going to do things they shouldn’t...that’s a cost we pay for the benefits of the 2A.

Of course dividing America has been the goal of some people for a while and they’re succeeding in some areas.

Some people including the Peoples Liberation Army Cyberwarfare arm. I have no doubt a goodly bunch of the current disruptions are either organized or funded by China to sow discord and weaken the US just as their Coronavirus did.

Went to the LGS today and they were selling guns like there were no more to be had and this was at 12:00 noon.

Not here, but there are a lot of guns already. LGS I visited last week said, nothing out of the ordinary for traffic, but suppliers were saying there might be a week or two delay on shipping some very popular items going to other places.

Bargins galore? I serious doubt it. Even the Newbies will not forget what has happened for a very long time. And in a uncertain world, I doubt many will just be getting rid on any guns purchased, especially knowing the hassle to get one again. Anyone who believes this kind of explosion across America and think it is over is beyond any rational thinking IMO. They will never be happy no matter what you give them. They will become more organized and deadly in the future.More and more Anti American organizations will be forming. There will be retaliations from all sides from the past week. Sorry, if I disagree with you, but I truly believe the is only the beginning we are seeing. And I predicted this present uprising and assault a long time ago.
And yes, I do predict many more women will be entering into the world of guns for self protection. And can you blame them?

Hi...
LGS around my area are out of ARs and most semi auto pistols except for some very expensive models. Most shops have instituted a limit on ammunition, usually two boxes per caliber.
Instant check system is overwhelmed. I waited 40 minutes for an instant check on a Uberti Schofield replica clone last week. Usually takes a couple of minutes.

All of the LGS in my area have limited stock. Ammo is pretty much being "rationed", too, just like your area.

In the “old days”, I had plenty of line time waiting for Brady Bill delays, sheriff approvals, permit to purchase requests, drive time, return drive time, record checks, etc. - then I got spoiled by lots of inventory and modern laws and approval methods - in and out.
I now have what I need and then some so no need for line waiting. I did just order a Shiloh Sharps Long Range Express; I have been told the present wait time for a custom build is 17 months - but that has always seemed to be that way with that builder. If I get attacked by a herd of rioting, burning, looting bison, I will definitely be in trouble.
