Until this week...

I own multiple high-end and custom 1911's, Sigs, many beautiful S&W revolvers, and a number of other handguns. Glocks have never interested me. They all look the same; every cop in the nation owns one (so they're not unique); and their frames are plastic!

Last week I started a thread, on a state-specific gun forum that I frequent, called, "The Best Handgun in the World?"

I was basically asking everybody, given specific criteria, which ONE gun fits their description as the best handgun in the world? The criteria I gave was as follows:

- Price
- Capacity
- Concealability
- Comfort to shoot
- Caliber
- Visual Aesthetics
- Accuracy
- Reliability
- OTHER... (Feel free to add your own category)

I was not starting this thread to figure out which handgun to buy. I wasn't even in the market for a new handgun; I have plenty!

At the time of starting this thread, my personal recommendation of the best handgun in the world was the .40 cal Sig P229. I guess the only thing I could think of that would improve this gun would be to make it a bit slimmer.

However, I got so many responses from people recommending the Glock 19 as the best handgun in the world, that it made me start thinking.

I didn't own any Glocks. I have never REALLY hated them, like the title of this thread would lead you to believe. I just never wanted to own one myself.

I have actually recommended them numerous times to people who were wondering what handgun they should buy as a first home defense/carry gun. They have such a great reputation for reliability and ease of use that I knew I was safe recommending them even though I've never owned one. And since I've been shooting handguns since before I can remember, ease of use isn't a huge factor to me, because I'm more than comfortable using the more "complicated designs" out there.

While thinking about the Glock 19, however, I watched a number of Glock videos on youtube, including this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri5AyXzxb4o. I had a very hard time sleeping that night. All I could think about was going to the gun store the next day to buy my first G19.

Well, I did it, and here it is:

Glock 19 w/Trijicon Night Sights, and it came with 3 magazines for $549...

I truly couldn't be happier with this gun! The day I got it home I detail stripped it, did a .25 cent trigger job on it, cleaned all the factory gunk off of everything, lubed it up and reassembled. I can't believe how well made it is. When cleaning with solvent soaked Q-tips, I usually have to switch Q-tips very often since most guns have machine marks and rough spots that destroy my cotton Q-tips. However, this gun is so smooth on the inside, that I don't think I had to toss out a single Q-tip due to it tearing up on rough spots. I'm a clean-a-holic, so this is important to me.

I took it to the range the next day and put 300 flawless rounds through it.

Here is a picture of my very first target at 30 feet; this is an entire box of ammo:

They're a bit to the left, but I'm sure it's my grip. I do that with a few of my guns.

I have been carrying this gun exclusively all week, and I can tell you it's the most comfortable mid-size handgun I own.

I am a convert, and I have a feeling more black plastic guns are in my future.

Congrats. The fact that you are getting this much enjoyment out of your chosen weapon is, after all, the main idea.

Personally, I prefer the Springfield Armory XD when it comes to polymer framed weapons (nothing inherently wrong with a Glock, though). But, that is just me. Outside of this, I am a staunch Sig Sauer fan as well.

Either way, once again...congrats. Enjoy shooting and enjoy that gun! :)

My user name might lead one to believe I own and shoot more .22s than anything else. I probably do shoot more .22 than anything else, but I also own a wide variety of handguns in many calibers, and shoot them all frequently.

When it comes to 9mm, the Glock 19 is pretty tough to beat.

I carried a G26 for almost a year and it is not that different than a G19, traded it off for a CZ PO1 thankfully, much better handgun for me. I bought a G17 earlier this year and even that is better for me than the G19.

Can't dispute anything you say, except this:

- Comfort to shoot

I have shot many Glocks and very much wanted to like them for all the obvious reasons, but "comfort" is not in the program. No Glock I've ever held has felt good in the hand. In fact, they almost hurt. A square block in the palm is not ergonomic, and a Glock does not slip into the palm the way a Baretta or H&K does.

martialartsblackbelt:

I think I am pushing the gun in anticipation of the recoil. I was firing fairly rapidly, and I think I was pushing to compensate for the recoil, and it's obvious that I was OVER-compensating.

I have to agree with you, Shockwave. I have difficulties warming up to the ergonomics of the squarish grips of the Glock. My (2nd generation) G19 was surprisingly accurate and absolutely reliable, but I still sold it as even with a Hogue Handall (with finger groove and palm swell) it wasn't comfortable for me.

I understand the 4th generation Glocks feel different, so I might see if they feel any better for me.

In all, I like Glocks and truly believe they are among the absolute best service handguns out there. They just don't work for me in terms of comfort.

shockwave:

I can't argue with you here. The Glock is by no means the most comfortable to shoot. However, I do like the way that it points, and being that it is so good at so many other things, I think I will get over this issue. It is becoming an excellent carry gun, and I plan to put thousands of rounds through it. But if I am at the range and want comfort, I'll probably still shoot my 1911's.

ok you are shooting to the left and i am too with my glock 23.
dead center with my S&W sigma .40
you said it may be your grip?
can u elaborate?

a lot of people have the issue of shooting their glock's to the left, leading many to think that's the way it's sighted in at factory, when it's actually an issue of trigger control and grip.

when you're pulling the trigger, you're pushing the glock to the left. something that isn't an issue if you have large hands (i don't) as you can get more of your trigger finger around the trigger and pull straight back more easily. being that my trigger finger is barely wrapped around the font face of the trigger, i was pushing to the left when trying to get the trigger to break. the factory connector (5.5.lb) was too much for me.

i installed a 3.5lb factory connector and a NY-1 spring. this combo eliminated the issue by providing a consistent pull. installing just the 3.5lb connector alleviated the issue as well, but it seemed more effective for me with the NY-1 spring.

Congrats on the 19!

I never warmed up to Glocks, but have owned a 19 and a 23. The shooting left will go away with some more trigger time. I shot a friends 10mm Glock today, and that grip is unbareable!:barf: Loved my compacts, however. They shoot great, but just don't fit comfortably in my hands. My Brother's G36 is a different story, that fits as well as a 1911 in my hands!:)

Enjoy the best Glock out there!!

I bought my first Glock 19 in 1988. I loved the look of the gun back then and still do today. They look like they are designed for serious business. I still own that series 1 and will never sell her. She has probably 10,000 rounds through it without an issue. Since then I have gathered most of the Glock models they make. I also love 1911's and other makes like Sig, H&K, Smith etc. For me if I had to depend on one handgun for life it would be my Glock 17.

Many could argue that the Glock model 17 might be the most issued, popular handgun in the world.

For me the simplicity of no gadgets to remember, a just grab and shoot is a big plus. Also a FTF is non existant for any of my Glocks.

I still hate glocks. I'm on my third.

The bulletproof finish is great for a beater. If I could get glock to refinish one of my 1911s I'd gladly "demote" one to beater duty.

I'm doing pretty good with this one. Had it a while, so I guess I'm keeping it.

The blasted things make believers. In 1996 I was less than thrilled to be issued a Glock. I was a S&W man exclusively back then. After shooting it and not allowed to clean it for 4 months I decided anything that not only kept running that dirty and kept hitting where I pointed it would do just fine. I haven't been without one since.

But haven't quit buying Smiths....

Most people that "hate" Glocks haven't given them an honest try. It's easier just to jump on the bandwagon and bash on them. Any of my friends who felt that way don't feel that way after I get them to shoot mine, and several of them now own their own

Congrats on your G19. In my opinion, it's the best in Glock's lineup
