what would you do. A guy that owes me 400 bucks he told me he could give me choice of 3 rifles he owns instead of the money.

1. Ruger mark II 7mm mag with a tasco scope. Gun is in good shape the wood stock is probably a 8 out of 10. Blueing is perfect in the gun itself. He said gun was made in the 80's.

2. Winchester model 70 syn stock 7mm WSM with a nikon scope gun is in very good shape. Has a limb saver. 2004 model he said.

3. Winchester model 70 syn stock 300 WSM with a nikon scope gun is in very good shape it also has a limb saver. 2004 model he said.

I need a deer rifle for hunting deer and hog in Alabama, Tenn, Miss this coming fall. I have a 308 and wanted to step up which would you take.

If it were me, I'd probably go with:

But that's just me.

If the M70s are the classics (controlled feed, like the pre-64) I think I'd get the 7mm short mag. I really like 7mm bullets for the ballistic coefficients and sectional densities. But, the 300 would be fine, too. They're all nice rifles. Maybe go with the one that has the best glass if they have glass.

The 7mm rem mag is probably going to be the easiest to get ammo for if you don't reload. I like mine, but it's a savage. It's got way more power than necessary for deer hunting and I hardly ever shoot it anymore, prefer my .308. It's a powerful load for about anything in the lower 48, though.

for dollar value, 2 and 3 are same/same and worth more than the ruger. i'd go w/ the 7 wsm of those 2.

the ruger would be my first choice of the three, but i'd make him keep the scope, and toss in $100 - and walk away knowing he got a slightly better deal but that i got a classic rifle.

I'm with dakotasin, I know the Wins are worth more, but just like the ole Ruger M77. (Was the first centerfire rifle bought by myself).

if you like some great long range shooting, that 7wsm is a great choice, and will thump game a long way out. ammo is expensive for all of these, so reloading is preferred.

How come no one is asking about the glass option?!? Either Nikon could be worth the entire $400. Which Nikon model is mounted on the Winchesters?

All things being equal in the glass dept., I'd go with either of the Winchesters. Not much diff in those two calibers as far as deer/hog rifles.

300WSM for sure.

I'm in the process of making either a .270WSM or .300WSM my primary big game rifle, and am leaning mostly towards the .300WSM having had good experiences w/.300win mag.
