I am trying to decide between two riffles that my local sporting shop has in and is willing to hold and accept payments on it for me, I’m more familiar with handguns then riffles so would greatly appreciate your input on which I should choose and why.

Thanks in advance…

Rifle one: “Used” Ruger M77 30/06 with Kevlar stock (added by previous owner) and Nikon lifetime warranty scope ($150.00 scope)
Price: $475.00

Riffle two: “New” Winchester M70 Super Shadow in 7mm WSM (no scope)
Price on sale” $425.00

I had to vote for the '06. The Ruger will be more than accurate enough for a deer rifle. The difference is price. Yes it costs $50 more, but if you are buying factory ammo, you will probably make up the difference quickly buying 30-06 vs 7mm WSM. You can also buy milsurp '06 for practice at very reasonable prices. And both would be equally effective on deer sized game.

+1 on the ammo cost. Soon will be looking for WSM ammo on the collector tables.
30-06 been around 100 years, doubt the WSM will last more than 20...

7wsm will be a little harder to find then a 7mm rem and then you would have to worry about discontinuation of the round. i don't think that will happen but i heard comments about it. buying it at turners?

Not that 7mm WSM and .30-06 aren't acceptable deer cartridges, but they are a bit more than you need if deer is to be your only game. A lighter caliber will promote better marksmanship for most people.

Might I suggest a .25-06. Will be the same price as .30-06 in the Ruger.

Of course, a new Ruger will be the same price as the used one you're looking at, but minus the scope.

Between the two you have listed, the .30-06 for sure. More flexible round.
