I Heard The Shelves Were Empty

One of the local Walmarts had several boxes of WWB 7.62x39 when I was in there on Saturday (buying .22LR, coincidentally). Of course, that's at $28/box for (I believe) 50 rounds - most buyers probably aren't that desperate.

In MN I have no trouble finding most calibers at the sporting goods stores, except 7.62x39, and .380acp. However, WalMart is sold out of just about everything as soon as it arrives. What ever happened to the 1400 round cases of surplus 7.62x39 that I used to get for $125???

Reloading supplies seem to be getting the "Panic Buying" treatment these past couple of months.
I was at Cabelas and Sportsman's Warehouse looking for powder, primers, ammo storeage boxes and a new progressive press only to find nearly everything gone. S.W. told me that it's hard to keep reloading supplies on the shelves and the price keeps going up.
Varget was $150 for an 8 pounder! Plus tax! Primers were about $33-$40+ depending on brand and type. Small rifle was hard to find, as usual.
They has ONE reloading press. It was Lee's smallest single stage job. Absolutely no progressives. They had only received two progressives in the past two weeks and they sold them on the same day that they hit the shelf.

Titan6 : Which state did you find millions of .223Rem ammo????????????? I found 20 boxes TOTAL and that was mostly the $31/box of 20 rds of Nosler Ballistic Silver Tip stuff. Hardly plinkin' ammo!

I don't know where Titan6 is, but there's plenty of .223/5.56 ammo in Utah.

.223 is getting scarce here. Local gun shop has to buy nearly 100,000 rounds at a time to get any at all. All of which sold very quickly....

Wally World hasn't gotten any bulk packs of .223 in a while....

On the other hand, I don't have a .223 rifle. 7.62x39 is getting harder and harder to come across, which is what I shoot.

.223Rem seems like it's spotty in various parts of the country.

I think if you walk into the store at just the right time you'll find a ton but 2-3 days later, they're empty again.

.223 is nearly impossible to find unless horribly overpriced. I saw a guy (Mark's Guns in Florence, Kentucky) charging $10 for Wolf .223.

And he was selling them.

I am having a little difficulty finding reloading components, Midway seems out of many items I want, and the local Pop dealer is sold out of all powders.

So I don't know about you, but the message I got from that video was that people are rushing out to buy M60s because they are affraid of their neighbors.

Amidst all the panic buying. And indeed here is a shop owner talking about all the panic buying. What is that on the shelf behind him? Yep, dozens of evil rifles.....

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/...n4751431.shtml

I lot of those rifles behind those shelves are NFA firearms. Not a lot of people will have that kind of money to dump on those firearms right now (the M60 goes for over $30,000 full auto). The report does seem a little skewed that people a buying machineguns left and right.

Of course the media will find a shop with plenty of scary looking rifles on the rack. They can't scare the general public with a few hunting rifles on the rack.

They are good, aren't they. Lie/mis inform/skew, and all with a smile.

Criminy, can't read anything about guns without some Brady Bunch airhead quote added. We need that kind of publicity.

On another note the ammo situation seems to change depending on where you look. I ordered 1000 rounds .45 ACP in November on line at Cabela's website and it is still not in. Should be in later this week. I got tired of waiting on them and ordered 1000 rounds from Ammunition to Go and it arrived in less than 10 days. Go figure.

Not really where I live, Wally still has 100rd boxes of 9mm for <$20 and local sports authority had WWB actual 5.56mm boxes. .45 seems harder to come by around here though.

The only thing they were out of here in Myrtle Beach was .38SPL (part of the reason I went), and 100 rnd. WWB of .40S&W (had it in 9x19mm and .45ACP)... they did have lotsa blazer (all calibers) though, which is kinda unusual for this area.

Plenty of (overpriced) 5.56x45 and 7.62x39. Not a lot of .308,though. Or .30-'06, but that could just be an anomaly, and not linked to any panic buying.

I purchased a Hornady LnL AP a year ago. That is the good news because I hear now they are virtually impossible to get without a significant wait.
Shell plates and holders, I have been waiting for, for over 6 weeks, from Cabellas. I guess I could pay full retail from the Hornady site and eventually may on the more obscure components.

It has been hit and miss on powders, primers, cases and bullets around here.

I see Hornady still has the free bullet offer. It took about two months to get the 1K 45 ACP a year ago, I'll bet it's 3 months or more now.

I don't know what the ammunition situation is here in West Knoxville but I need to go on an expedition and find out.

Before Xmas it was slim pickings on .223 and 30-30, but hey it was hunting season. ;)

KCKS and less recently Virginia. I agree there are probably local shortages some places both the areas I am talking about have large numbers of shooters. Both the WalMart and the sporting goods stores were well stocked.

It is went away with the economy.

What the deal with Midway? They hardly have any brass at all. At least any caliber I need, in any brand-backorder.

It's pretty simple really. You aren't the only one that wants it. EVERYONE wants it. They are out. It'll be a while til they restock. I've been through a few scares in my lifetime and this one tops them all. Not just the gun and ammo shortages but the economy and general attitude of everyone I meet. People are scared. Wait til food and other neccesities become scarce.

I just put in an order for miscellaneous reloading stuff at Midway last week (no components), and they had all of it and it posted as shipped later that day.

rickomatic is spot on. There are a LOT of people who are scared of what the future may bring. In addition to those of us who are already gun owners, the number of folks buying their first gun is significant, and those folks are buying ammunition to feed the new guns. The customer base that we are all used to has expanded hugely, and it appears the manufacturers underestimated the post-election "surge".

As the economy slid into the tank, and as ammunition prices ramped up, a lot of gun owners who had been toying with the idea of reloading suddenly got serious about it. Moreover, those who already reload suspected the component prices would follow the finished ammunition prices and started buying powder and primers ahead of the price increases. In November I paid $120 for the 8-pound container of Varget that MinnMooney recently saw at $150.

All the gun shops I've been to around me carry between 0-15 boxes of 20 in 7.62x39. I don't want to pay the extra in shipping for online ammo, but I might have to... :(
