I love Sean Penn

OK, someone with real help, supplies/food, is turned away because he does not belong to any recognized or "authorized" organization.

How did Penn get through? Does he belong to an "authorized" organization?

Whatever his motives (and perhaps he does not have plans to ever run for political office), Penn is doing something. Even if he's misguided in many of his views, at least he has a social conscience, and is putting his time, money and energy to use (which is far more than most celebrities ever do).

Now, I'm by no means a Sean Penn fan (although his "Spiccoli" in Fast Times at Ridgemont High IS an all-time classic role), and he may not be as competent a rescuer as we all know we'd be ... but I'm sure if he's actually rescued even one family, that's to his credit.

I would also like to know how he got in when a lot of other citizens were turned away and when there is a mandatory evacuation order in place. Strange that, however inept he might be, he is actually trying to do what a lot of folks would like to do but can't. One of the local (Shreveport, LA) boat dealers put together a bunch of boats and people to go help rescue people but they were turned away b/c it was too dangerous.

I've got it - the Guardsman who let him in spent $4.25 in 1986 to see "Shanghai Surprise" and had been waiting to get his revenge ever since... :D

Whatever his motives . . . Penn is doing something.
Yeah, getting in the way. Though he may have had good intentions, if he had been thinking , he might have come up with the notion that he could have actually accomplished something worthwhile by paying the freight on a load of supplies rather than paying the freight on an entourage and personal photographer.

Among the reasons the 'authorities' don't want freelancers going in, is that they more often than not end up being in need of rescue themsleves, unnecessarily stressing an already overburdened system and consuming resources that should go to those who actually need them in teh process.

IMO, he's just another grandstanding 'celebrity' moron.

Yeah, I understand John Travolta has contracted out a jet and been flying medical supplies in at his own expense and making them available to responders. No personal photographers or sensationalism. If Penn wants to impress his good intentions on people, he could lose the publicity (or is that agenda?) team for starters.

That Shanghai Surprise line is priceless! :D

I vote we leave Geraldo, Penn and their respective entourages stranded in NO after everybody else leaves. Then we can all take dibs on who resorts to cannibalism first.

Oh, it would be Geraldo...have you ever really looked at his eyes. :uhoh: I saw him at a book signing once....spooky!

I don't believe it for a second. Sean (Be sure to photograph my good side) Penn's only motive is increasing his box office by "playing" a real hero. :scrutiny: One of the most highly recognized of hollyweird's elitist Bastards, Sean I'm ready for my close up Mr. De'Mille Penn (I don't believe) does anything that does not further his career. His intentions are to maintain a station well above us lesser humans.

Elitist Bastard: One who claims greater knowledge or authority over others without legitimate status.

Hey, Sean Penn's problems provided some comedy relief for those who saw it. That ain't bad at such a time, when laughs are few and far between.

One thing that showed was the morale boost when people were visited by some of the Pretty People. Doesn't matter if it was "merely" a photo-op if those who were suffering were uplifted by even some small amount.

Face it: The supermarket tabloid set will get a serious morale boost if their version of an Important Person shows that "He cares!"

who knows, maybe he even carried one of his pistols in to stop the "snipers". You all do know that he has a permit to carry, issued to him in Marin county in the bay area?

and bringing in his personal photographer! as one story related. As usual, it's a hollywood elitist interested in his image and nothing else.

Like he needs a bigger one...

Travolta is probably flying his jet, unless he wanted a larger one for this
Hell, he already owns a Boeing 707, what does he need, his own 747 or A380?
