I have a 15 year old that has started bird hunting with me. I would like to get him an over and under but I can't afford a browning like mine. I looked at the frachie titanium grades but they are still a little steep. I don't want junk just cheap.

What's the budget? Used/new?

The gun shops around me seem to be filled with used firearms that folks recently traded in for that new deer rifle, so there ought to be a good deal or two on a OU that someone else started breaking in for your friend.

I use a stoeger condor 20 ga. It cost $350 and came with $50 in shells. I'm sure there are those that will say its junk, but it have served me well for two years. I bought it to try out upland bird hunting and plan on replacing it with something nicer, but I would think it'd be a great gun for a 15yo.

I got a Baikal (Russian) 12 ga S x S used for $220 but like new and built like a tank. I love it for HD and rabbit hunting (this particular one is open choke both barrels).

I think EAA in Florida is importing O/U from Russia and other countries and at least the Russian Baikal seems to be well made.

Maybe you should take your son to the local trap/skeet club and let him borrow/rent all types of guns to see which HE prefers. A gun that doesn't fit properly or point well, no matter how cheap or costly, will be painful.

BTW, cheap and quality are opposites, ESPECIALLY when it comes to O/U and SxS guns

he is not my son, but I would like to get him one anyway. his dad died one morning getting ready for work. his mom don't have a lot of money. I was hoping to keep it around $500/$600 because I have three little girls of my own. I am hoping to find a value gun. we have a place here to fit him with the shot gun. he shoots my browning very well. he has a mosberg pump but he looses all my hulls. and I would like him to feel like he's on the same playing field as us. we all shoot browning and berreta shotguns and he has to shoot his old mosberg. not that there's anything wrong with that but I would like to do this for him.

Coug / Need a quality affordable shotgun

Coug,

If you have a Academy store nearby, look at a Yildiz 20ga O/U. It is turkish made with some nice wood and has five chokes with it for $399.99. They even have a youth model, with a shorter stock to fit the smaller in stature. I have owned one for two years in 12ga. and the only draw back is the kick, because it is a light gun. My grandson has a 20ga and the kick is not as bad.
Putting a Remington gel-pad or Limbsaver kick pad which are after market equipment will do the trick.

I agree with oneounce in getting a proper fit, this makes the shooting experience much more fun and enjoyable.

Several years ago I introduced the wife to dove hunting. She's about 5'3" and needed 12 1/4 inches of pull. I didn't want to chop a good gun nore did I wish to handicap her with a small gauge or inappropriate chokes. We bought a 12 ga. Baikal, then EAA not Remington Spartan. Had it cut to length, started out with 1 oz. light loads. She now shoots 1 1/4 oz. field loads and 3" steel on waterfowl. The gun is selective ejection, single selective trigger and has invector chokes. Now she won't retire it in favor of a "quality" gun.

An old proverb warns to beware of the man who owns one gun, he can likely shoot it.

If you all shoot Berettas and Brownings, I suggest you get the same for the 15 year old. A used Citori without screw-in chokes is going to probably cost you a little more than your budget, but is probably your best choice. I recently saw one for $599 and GA has one right now for $700.

Coug, you're a heck of a person. I grew up without much due to a dad hooked on the bottle and an under educated mom trying to raise 5 of us. You'll have an impression on that kid that'll last his lifetime (I'm 43 with a terrible memory, but remember instances of similar kindness like it was yesterday.)

http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ has some over unders in your price range.

Good luck!

Just picked up a Stoeger Condor in 410 for rabbits. I hope to do well with it, dropping from my 20ga pump. I paid $359 and all the various gauge condors go for the same price.

Good luck with the boy and God bless you for your care for some one not your own who needs a big brother/father figure.

I know its not an over under, but seeing as how he's already used to shooting a Browning, why not get him one. Browning BPS shotguns are $600 for the 12 to 20ga shells and $640 for the 28 & 410 shells. Completely ambidextrous and comes with 3 choke tubes. Shot with one for a while and it was very nice. Bottom eject takes some getting used to though.

there are some guys over on shotgunworld that have 10,000+ rounds through one of those academy yildiz shotguns. they're stiff when new, and the ejectors are too powerful, but they're not bad. Probably the best of the cheap shotguns.

does it have to be an O/U? you can get a nice auto for your price range.

i have a 20ga. stoeger,,i think it is called an up lander,,choke tubes,,28",,solid rib,,ss

a little more blocky than my Browning's,,,but i can shoot that little gun every bit as good and it is a clay bird grinder,,dove killin gun,,think i gave around $280,,love the little thing

i also have one in 12ga. 26",,tubes,,X used it when we were cowboy shooting,,it is cut to about 13 1/4-1/2,, little short for me but usable,,i like it in the rabbit thickets,,short easy to handle

lots of the cowboy and girls use the stoeger stuff and some other ss guns,,they will take a beating and keep on ticking as the saying goes,,speaks for their quality some i think

i have some expensive stuff and some not so expensive,,,just depends on how it is gona be treated where it gets used

i have o/u and ss,,single trigger and double,,i like them all,, i have no trouble making the transition between them,,although some do

if you are worried about the hulls the stoegers extract but don't eject,,at least mine do,,most guys will put their hand over the breach just before ejection happens anyway and in efect they have extractors,,when you are gaming i guess the ejectors are nice to clear the chamber

if you want an o/u im sure stoger makes them too,,,they are nice guns for the money,,,that's just my opinion,,and my .02

YMMV

and by the way,,that's a very nice thing you are doing for this young man,,he will never forget it, and i hope you two have lots of pleasurable hours in the field together,,i sure you will

I suggest you also look for a Marlin Model 90 O/U. My dad bought a used 12 ga. for me when I was 14 in 1957. He cut off the stock and installed a recoil pad for me. He added a piece back to the stock when I got bigger. It doesn't look like much but I still have it and still shoot it as well as any of my other shotguns. I think they handle and shoot great (Over the years, I have acquired 14 Model 90DT's and ST's in various gauges and barrel lengths!). My favorite upland bird gun is Model 90 DT with 26" barrels choked IC/Mod.

Model 90's have fixed chokes, double triggers and extractors, although some Model 90 ST's were made. A 12 ga. can be found for around $300-350. 16 and 20 ga Model 90's guns generally start at around $400.

Why you still can! I hear they are still at good price around 450-500 but as soon as stock is out it will become special order only! I am not much on wally world but reports on this gun are awesome.

I am trying to get a hold of each guage myself! They make them in 12,20,16, and 410. But after stock are gone in stores they will be much higher to special order. And reports are saying that collectors and gun dealers are grabbing them up!

I dont really have a personal review of it, but have held one and loved it, then our store did not have one in stock when I went back to get one.

Coug,

I admire what you are trying to do. Does it have to be a new gun or would a used one do the job?

If a used gun would suffice I would take a long look at the SKB/Ithaca 505 or the Marlin 90.

New guns I might consider the Yildez. I have a friend who has a Stoeger that he really likes. You might check the Lanber they are in the price range. However I don't know much about them.

I hear really good stuff about Yildez, and I believe you can get a new one for around 300 to 400 dollars.

I know you said O/U, and I don't mean to muddy the water, but have you considered a good, used SxS? My brother got a Stevens 311 20 ga., 26" IC/M gun for Christmas about 40 years ago. It's light, easy to carry, swings nicely, and you can drop it on the ground and not worry about it. Just a thought.
