Thats 1.5% of the population over the age of 18, which seems slightly below the norm for most CCW friendly states, but otherwise in line with most stats I've seen.
I too am surprised by how few people have them, but then again, the majority of folks in suburban and rural areas (who are more likely of a pro-gun political inclination), don't see the need, as they've never really had anything bad happen. I would have fallen into that group, but I was misfortunate enough to have been sucked into various urban sinkholes due to career considerations. By the time my naive rural butt was mugged THREE times, I began to understand how it might be worth jumping through all the hoops and spending all the $$$ that it takes to get that darn CCW.
Perhaps, ultimately, that is why so few people actually have them. If it was a checkbox on the renewal form for a drivers license and didn't cost anything extra, I figure the number would be a LOT higher. The hoop jumping in most states is formidable.
