I never see full length AR-15s

They found out during sustained fire the top mount charging handle got too hot to touch and they moved it to the rear where it is today. Seeing as this is a semi I am building and I believe in aimed fired I don't anticipate a problem with heat.

My only current AR is a 20". Love that gun, just ordered another 500 rounds for it.

TonyAngel, the Spike's dissy is a special upper that is sold only through AIM Surplus. They seem to be constantly backordered on these. I bought mine months ago, and I only got it because I pounced on one as soon as I got an e-mail showing they were back in stock. You can sign up for an e-mail alert at:

Make note of this URL, because it's not shown on AIM's main website.

I think the biggest reason we see so few full-length ARs is because here in the states, the main purposes they serve (not counting use by law enforcement) are for home-defense, or as tacticool range toys.

For either purpose, a short(er) barrel and collapsible stock makes more sense.

FWIW, when I was deployed to Iraq in '06, I was issued an M16A2, and while I didn't hate it, collapsible-stock M4s are far more comfortable, to me at least.

Colt SP1
Shot one a couple times. Accurate. Light. Triangular.

Speaking of SP1s, any info on how good the Centuary Arms C-15 SP1 style rifle is?
I know Century has a bad rap, but ARs are hard to screw up.

The price is quite tempting and the config is right (I like A1 and A2 configurations about equally).

20

My favorite is a fixed handle A2 style 20" govt. profile. All RR. Next, heavy 16" mid length gas system flat top.
Picked up a XM177 look alike for trade material but I am thinking about an A 1 clone. Came with Nodak Spud U/L with a BM barrel and a fake moderator.
All I need is barrel, stock and tri-handguards.

I would like to have a 20" 300AAC barrel but I think hell would freeze over before that happens. 16" seems to be it these days.

I like my 20" ARs better than my M4gery.

A 16" barrel with a flash hider is almost as long as a 20" barrel without.

Then there are the 24" heavy barrel crew served ARs.

To me, a 20" rifle AR-15 is the only one to have. That is just my opinion. Your right. You don't see a lot of them at the range. Most of the people who own them shoot NRA HP matches probably. I like the extra feet per second they can give. I like the balance of the rifle, and I also like the look.

I am out a AR-15 now. Things keep interfering with my purchase, but in April a 20" WOA upper and a CMMG lower will be in my safe.

As Eb1 noted, hang around a High Power match and the shortest you'll see will be a 20" ... along with a goodly number of 24s and 26s on the match rifles based on ARs. My 2 20s balance well - especially after adding the wheel weights under the handguards (they kind of go with the lead buttstock wedge).

Not just at the range, but I can hardly find one in a store anymore.
It's strange to think that it's harder to find the "standard" version than it is to find a variant. The same goes for Cz-75s in my neck of the woods.

I love my Colt AR-15 20 inch (M16A2 clone).
I enjoy my Colt 6920 16 inch M-4, my Colt A3 tactical carbine, and my DPMS PCAR (CAR-15 clone). I have a stripped lower that I will build something handy with also.
I have over 20 years with the weapon platform as a soldier and a law enforcement officer. I have carried the rifle in combat and carried one in a squad car. Also still one of my favorite target / range rifles.
I am NRA certified Patrol Rifle Instructor.
I love the AR / M16 / M4 rifle in any configuration.

anybody need any colt stripped sp1 slab sided aluminum uppers, real nice shape, internally looks new,200 each plus ship, let me know.i have had these since the early/mid 80's.both were complete uppers i stripped for the colt chrome lined barrels.they all changed to forward assist and basically never shot the guns
.large front pin.
got 2.

M4 types are the modern fashion. When the next cool thing arrives, these things will surely be discarded.

I think you mean to say that a properly configured M4 carbine (or clone) often offers the best combination of price and performance of any currently extant firearm. Hence its near ubiquitous appearance in the hands of people (civilian, military and civil authority) who need to put the Pb into the A-Zone.

Go on though.

I'm listening.

The M4gery is the past decade's fad. Nowadays everyone wants a lightweight barrel profile, 14.5" + a pinned muzzle device, midlength gas system, 60" of free float rails, flip-up sights and the most futuristic looking & expensive stock that can hold a fruit roll-up and a spare battery or two. Seriously.

Now, that said, there's a small congregation of people coming to realize that carbine length gas is actually THE tried and true system and the alleged differences in recoil impulse aren't all that noticeable.
Most 14.5" bbl ARs use the carbine length gas system. The mid-length gas system came about to give 16" bbl ARs roughly the same dwell time as the carbine gas on 14.5" bbls, and rifle gas on 20" bbls.

theres a guy here that has one. i believe its an a1. he hasnt junked it up with crud hanging off everywhere, and it is just really sleek looking. all business.

i drool over it everytime i see it.

i really like 451's up there too. i havent seen that one before.
Mine has a forward assist but no shell deflector (a1) which would be pieriod from the 70's till the A2 came on the scene

Jerkface11 has an (m16) upper that's completely slick sided no FA or bump. But his is mounted on a cav arms poly lower (super lightweight)

Then the 14.5" pinned middy in my safe must be an ultra rare collectible! No, wait, there's tons of other people who own them also
Not in comparison to all the 14.5" & 16" barrel ARs with carbine length gas systems. Never aid they were rare, just not as common as carbine gas, particularly on 14.5" bbls.
