I got my 10/22 back from the 'smith today, got swivel studs installed in the factory stock, got the front Tech Sight installed (I couldn't get the factory front sight to budge no matter what), have 4 factory Ruger 10 round mags but I am going to purchase a few more, a brick of CCI Mini-Mags, now I just need a sling.

I was looking at this one, http://www.cdnninvestments.com/m1cargreenwe.html but I am wondering if the Appleseed one is better. Since I am sort of going for the 10/22-M1 Carbine look I figure a USGI M1 Carbine sling would work.

I also have a shooting mat, got the water/food thing down, notebook, etc. I also need to find some elbow pads (even the most rugged shooters I know say that their elbows become sore) anyone have some recommendations for these?

I would like to post a picture of the setup but I don't like taking sub par photos on my cell phone. I'm not as giddy with my LTR compared to my new AR.

I would recommend a soft, wrestling type of elbowpad, instead of hard shell tactical type. I found there was less irritating rubbing, and better traction, but you may be O.K. with the hard kind.

You'll want a regular GI style shooting sling that can be looped over your bicep. It doesn't look like the one you linked can do that. Any sling will work since Appleseed also teaches how to do a hasty sling, but a GI sling is much steadier.

I was looking all over for elbow pads before my first appleseed a few weeks ago. I found some really expensive ones at Dick's, but they were designed for lacross and hockey. I went to Walmart to purchase some ammunition, and looked in their sporting goods section. I found a pair of soft wrestling style elbow/knee pads there for about $6.00, and they worked really well. They were white with an elastic sleve, and very comfortable. The elastic didn't pinch, wasn't too tight, and they stayed in place. Worth much more than the $6.00 I paid, over the course of the weekend.

I used the cotton USGI sling on my 10/22, and it worked really well. Scored over 210 twice on the first day, and I have to give some credit to the proper instruction I received on using a sling. But you'll learn that the Natural Point of Aim is the most important thing, and I agree. Cleared 210 four times the next day, with a high of 230, so I'm happy. Have a good time at the appleseed, and pick up a pair of elbow pads at WalMart - you'll be happy you did.

I will just go with the sling from Appleseed, it may be more expensive but better safe then sorry.

I still don't understand all the different sling types, since I have done sling shooting with just a normal "carry" sling for hunting rifles. I will probably learn all this at the shoot.

Btw, the Tech Sight upgrade for the 10/22 is totally worth the money.

Get the sling you want, you don't have to buy it at Appleseed. They want a sling on the gun to teach you the proper way to use it. Whether it's an old, worn in leather sling, or fabric GI sling, new camo nylon sling, doesn't make a difference. I was shooting with guys who didn't have one and made them there with para-cord. You could probably use a neck-tie and as long as it was adjusted to the correct length, go the whole weekend and never miss a beat. The point is...get what you want, it'll work.

Regarding knee and elbow pads: I highly recommend them. I didn't have a shooting pad, I used an old piece of cheap carpet and by the end of day one, my elbow were bleeding. My suggestion for elbow pads: Go to WalMart or some big sporting goods store and get a pair of kids knee pads. They don't have hard cups or straps, usually pull right on, are soft and flexible and will do a great job with having to spend a fortune. Yes you read that right, little kids knee pads for your elbows.

Watch this video, the sling you get has to able to do this. It has to detach from the butt and be able to be made into a loop that goes around your arm.

Just got back from my first Appleseed. Couldn't stay for the whole program, my boys had to be somewhere. Wow, I sucked.

Thanks for all the help guys, gonna order my sling and have it here in a few days. Meanwhile I will get my Tech Sights zeroed for 25 yards.

Can't wait to go the the Appleseed, good thing I still have about a month because I need to start waking up earlier.

This the look you want?

M1 carbine tribute stock, complete with authentic M1 sling and oiler.

I don't know how the sling would do at an Appleseed ( have never been taught how to use a sling), but the sling is very useful. I thought the rifle was nice before, now it feels like a dandy little thing, and very nice to handle and shoot!

Good luck at the Appleseed! I have heard quite a lot about them, and wish I could go to one, unfortunately there aren't any around in my area.

I have seen the Tribute stock before, but it is a little too much that I would like to spend on my 10/22 (coming from a guy who has bought cheap gimmick stuff for it). I want to keep it pretty much standard, I will figure out a way to make a top hand guard and have it fit on the factory stock.

Just need a piece of walnut, cut it down to shape, refinish it and maybe make/modify the existing barrel band.

check yer stuff good,,,

at my first Appleseed it started rainin' & my factory mags wouldn't drop from
my well broken in 10/22. And no, they didn't stop shootin' cause of rain. Only lightning will stop the show.

Make sure that ammo feed & ejects reliabilaty, as I found out, again, my stuff
wasn't as good as I thought. Take at least 400 rounds of your main stock, and 400 of another brand. A guy lent me some diffrent fodder that kept my time from being wasted by crap ammo. My 10/22 seems to like 40gr solid lead boolits vs. the HP bulk box stuff.

Changing mags during a timed event is a GREAT learning tool. I numbered my mags, cause you shoot ALOT of strings of 2 + 8 (shoot two rounds, change mags, shoot 8 rounds) so you know which is which.
I took 4 mags + a backup gun (another 10/22)

Keep you're ammo & spare mags off the firing line so you can reload for the next string if you finish before the time is up. But take you're time (when you're given 4 minutes to shoot 10 rounds) when you can. You'll get the riflemans cadence thing down.

Go to the RVVA website & read the "what to bring" section of the Appleseed forum. That's a good start. Good luck
