I think you did just fine with your new 226. I have a slightly different experience, as I picked up a P226 that was not treated with respect by its previous owner(s). The result is a wonderful gun that takes the 124 HST you referenced and runs like a fat boy after an ice cream truck. I now so get the appeal of this gun.
You, like me, have a gun now that our kids will enjoy shooting long after we've checked out.
