Last week while at a local gunshop, a fellow customer ask the owner if he was interested in a 7.7 Japanese rifle, which the owner declined. I had been looking for one to compleate my WWII rifle collection, but couldn't find one that didn't have the mum ground off or wasn't sporterized.
The guy (in his early twenties) didn't know much about it other than his grandfather brought it back from the Pacific during WWII while serving in the Navy. I asked if the mum was still there and he didn't know what I was talking about until I called it a flower on the reciever and also had no clue as to the purpose of the AA sights.
Today we met at the gunshop and it looked great. All matching serial numbers on the bayonet lug, bolt, receiver, and bolt handle. The wood was in good condition as was the blueing. The mum was in perfect condition and the bore excellent. It also had the cleaning rod, AA sights, and an early hooked bayonet with scabard (no frog though). The rifle is a Nagoya Arsenal Type 99 and the bayonet is a Tokyo Arsenal. He gave me a box of 12 Norma 7.7 Jap ammo which I fired two to test it out when I got home.
All for $250. I'm sorry I don't have photos, my sister borrowed my camera for an Alaskan cruise which she is taking until the 28th.
So did I do ok, good, or make out like a bandit.
