Right on the edge of campus, so CHL is out (im 19 anyways). Last semester there were plenty of crazy hobo's, loud shoplifting nothing but trouble people. Also plenty of drunks. Couple of pervert peepers near the restrooms.

So far I've just kept my usual CRKT folder. Everytime I've called the security, they arrived after the incident. Security is getting lax now too, sometimes taking 30 minutes to get here (they have keys to the store for opening and closing).

What are my options? Bigger knife? Pepper spray? The little folder would do it intended purposes but I'd rather not have to use lethal force. Pepper spray seems ok but in the small inclosed space, i don't want to have to shut down an entire mall.

Stun guns? Maybe? How's he voltages work, whats effective? Does it penetrate through clothing? keep in mind I'm behind a counter and id have to jump over it or go around to get within distance.

"Convenience Store Clerk".........not a title I'd accept without the right-to-carry.......just my $0.02.:(

Body armor? You're too young for a CHL, so a handgun is out. I imagine your employer wouldn't approve of an 18" shotgun under the counter. :p

You could carry a folder up to 5.5". You could keep a 4 C cell Maglite nearby "in case the power goes out". ;) A can of OC might come in handy.

Arrange the store layout making it less "attractive".

One way in, one way out.
Yes this will tick folks off, and they will not enter, and some business may indeed be lost.
Then again, if a person sees when they enter, they "have to" follow this "lane" to get to smokes, beer, bathrooms, cokes, candy...etc.
These "less than ideal clientèle" often times do NOT like such layouts and these layouts act as a deterrent.

BGs : they do not like them either.
TIP: Make sure there is a definite aisle and barrier between YOU and BGs.
Distance is your friend.

Using LOTs of Mirrors on the wall, and everywhere is not only a deterrent, also allows YOU time to evade to a more secure area.

NOTE : Anything done to deter BGs CAN work against Good Guys
The mirrors are a OFTEN used tool by BGs to approach areas they want to approach or evade.

No Free Cigar.

Tools: Mental not so much Physical stuff.
Compressed Air Horn, like in the Marine/Boating section
That sucker is loud!
It will not only throw someone off guard, it can allow one enough time to take other actions, such as that broom , kept handy, or Bug Spray that shoots a stream, or that padlock on cable for locking a cooler.
That air piercing sound is a signal to others as well...

Learn to use what is handy. Do not become fixated on "guns" and "knives".
Distance is your friend and a broom has further reach than a knife.

Guns:
BGs know where guns are not allowed and ignore them.
Defend against guns.

Get some Katter-Blocks [cement blocks with the two holes in them] and put up and under the front of checkout.
Follow me here.
Set blocks down a onto a board, and fill holes with dirt and gravel.
Another board.
Stack another set, and fill holes again.

Shooting starts - hit the deck below these blocks!

Run to back room where all them cans of Cokes are stacked, behind the coolers...

All sorts of way to make cover.
Cover differs from concealment.

Step back and think how you would rob the place.
How you would shoplift or be a pervert and arrange the store and what would have you "deterred" .

Think outside the box.
Do not clutter the Mental with always fixating on the physical stuff as most do with guns, knives and all.

Start practicing reading "people, places and things".

Get another job. You couldn't pay me enough to work in a convenience store without a firearm close at hand. All it takes is once.

Even if you had a CHL I'm sure your company wouldn't back you if you had to use it. In your situation I would recommend either pepperspray which would suck to use in a store because it would clear it out and linger for a while. There are stun batons or a cattle prod which work good and give some space between you and the bad guy. The best option I think you have if you have the money would be a M18 Taser. You can find them for less than $300 and they are effective and I'm speaking from experience.

A can of bear spray would be about your best option if you cannot have a firearm. As 8830 mentioned, a taser might also be good, but will be more expensive.

Also take a look at Kimber's "Lifeact Guardian Angel". Fires two blasts of ultra hot pepper spray at 90 mph out to an effective distance of 13 feet. Might fit the bill...

i would buy a pepper gel it should do it, and you dont need to close the store because of any cross-contamination.

Folks, he cannot legally have a gun in that store.
He is under age 21.
I do not know the who or what on State Reg's, still from what I gather, a Firearm in that Store, even under the counter, back room or on person of a legal CCW is not allowed.

THR does not condone illegal ideas to be posted.

boredelmo,

I am dead serious, so please pay attention and submit this request to LEO agencies.

True:
Years ago there was a Rash of Convenience Store Crime.
From Murder, to Shootings to you name it.
Sheriff at the Time put inside these Stores a large "Box" like the old time phone booths, if you will. One way bullet proof mirrors.

Attention: There May or May Not be an ARMED Officer Of the Law Inside this Box with A Shotgun.
Criminals have been warned, so robbing this store is at your own risk!

Well some punks come in, pulled guns, fired a shot into the air and <expletive> give it up or we will kill you!

There was an Armed Deputy in that box with a shotgun, and that threat was stopped dead in tracks.

Now this idea was shown on TV, in the newspapers, shared on the radio before it was put into use.
Everybody, BG or Good Guy had exposure to this.

Another Robbery and again, stopped.

All of a sudden a cold ill wind blew through the BG community "Go to a 7-11 , and hold it up, you might get shot!

Now the deal was, these signs were posted, you could not help but see them.
These "boxes" were right there where you could not miss them!

Then Signs were posted and put into Liquor Stores, and the cooler where the beer was, might just have an Police officer armed with a Shotgun or even a AR, depending on location.
County, City, State Police were liable to be inside and armed.
One never knew if there was, still take your chances and suffer the consequences.

Hold ups plummeted! BGs went to other Counties and areas that did not have this "Crazy Sheriff, that guy will have folks shoot you if you rob in his county!

Too many underage folks working these Stores going to college.
Liquor Stores, well, even though folks had to be 21 or over to sell booze , BGs are BGs and deterrents work.

Sheriff Tommy Robinson.
Pulaski County, Arkansas

Look it up, and give to local LEO to read and study.

I would look for another job - there are tons of them out there - even WITH a CHL, I'd be worried about working that kind of job.

Bottleneck

If you change the floor layout so there's a bottleneck at the front counter -- that is, you can't enter or leave the store without going by the counter -- you should see a reduction in shoplifting.

Arranging the aisles so that they radiate from the front counter, reducing the number of places to hide (essentially, you have direct line of sight on most of the floor space), should also help.

Won't help with "invasion style" holdups.

What are your mirror & camera options?

Take sm's advice, and may I add - if the shooting starts, use the shoelace express and run like heck to get out of Dodge!

Folks, he cannot legally have a gun in that store.
That is not entirely correct. In Texas, the only thing preventing him from having a rifle or shotgun under the counter or whatever is company policy. That suggestion was made mostly in jest anyhow.

He is under age 21.
Meaning he isn't eligible for a CHL, so a handgun is out. That was established up front.

I do not know the who or what on State Reg's, still from what I gather, a Firearm in that Store, even under the counter, back room or on person of a legal CCW is not allowed.
Assuming his employer didn't object, it would be perfectly legal for him to keep a rifle or shotgun under the counter. It would be perfectly legal for someone with a CHL to carry in the store, assuming it wasn't posted with "30.06" signs.

THR does not condone illegal ideas to be posted.
I haven't seen any "illegal ideas" in this thread so far.

P.S. I would have preferred to do this via PM, but you appear to have PM's turned off.

First off, a folding knife is a compromise weapon. It has the benefit of being portable, but it sacrifices everything else to that end. Why limit yourself in this manner since you're talking about what you need at the store.

Second, a knife is easily trumped by a stout stick and the least little bit of training. Even with my training I'm going to think twice (perhaps thrice) before I dive in against some guy with an aluminum baseball bat.

Third, as SM and others have said, look around you and use your noggin. Do you have a clear route for sneaker-fu to be practiced? Out the back and let the BG have the store (if they won't protect you why protect their property). Practice this enough so that it's programed in. Open the register drawer and run for it. "Take it all! Byyyyyyy!" If you're in one of those wretched register islands in the middle of the place come up with measures that will allow you to throw up a chemical barrier (pepper fog, hornet spray) that will buy you the extra moment to bug out (sorry, I had to:evil:).

This isn't your store with your money invested so you have no reason to provide security for it. Your focus should be on preserving your hide.

2nd Hso's point. Evacuation, of the store not your bowels, should be your course of action when dealing with robbery. Sm's point are also ones you should take to heart. Battling it out with some shakey junkie who has a weapon in his hands should be the last resort...and then only to protect yourself. Let The Company absorb the loss of the money in the register; they clearly don't place much value on your life.

Fire extinguisher, ever get a face full of that... it sucks!

Dropped one on my foot once and it sure as the dickens hurt! I imagine getting hit in the face with it would be much worse!

What stevek said. The Kimber two shot pepper launcher might be a good choice for you.
