why not opt for select fire while you're at it? give yourself all the versatility you can. you guys are really shorting yourselves without choosing a select fire weapons.

by the way, what does your rifle weigh with the can and nv included? are these attached at all times?

BTW.......

Here is some info regarding the Ruger SR762.... ( This should make for a decent GPR in my case, as it has quite a few things about it that I am looking for.) Also make for a good host via a can, and plan to take full advantage of the flat top receiver. A sling is a must have for me, so this would be the last item I will probably add, other than optics.

The below link has a pic comparison of the SR762 next to the SR556...

I like the concept but, when you travel this road it can get exciting and expensive pursuing that dream GPR.

You make a good point. Averageman. Thanks for sharing your pic.
Can you give us some more details regarding your 3 rifles?

I'd love to! You bring up a great point, back40.

The FN FAL, which is my chosen GPR, was originally issued with a Safety Sear.
The Safety Sear would ensure the hammer was held back until the bolt was in full lock up, without the Safety Sear involved in the fire control group there is a much greater chance for Hammer Follow, Out of Battery Fire and doubling, even in semi-auto fire.

The problem I face is not just the money to make Uncle Sam happy but finding a gun smith/machinist that would be willing and able to machine my receiver to accept the Safety Sear.

So, it just comes down to money in my case.

I spent my Select Fire budget on optics...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NVS = 2.2 lbs
Can = 1.6 lbs

Both can be removed in a matter of seconds, or left in place....depending on the end user.

Very quiet while using subsonic loads when spindle valve is closed. The hammer dropping is about as loud as it gets.:)

so your GPR just became a 12.5 lb rifle? seems like a lot to lug around for the one gun that you grab for everything.

Actually, it comes out to 13.6 lbs with a topped off 20rd mag.

Removable in seconds when the sun comes out in the morining.:)

It allows one to identify, and accuratly place the shot out past 100yards without an artificial light source of any kind..... and regardless of how dark it is. It doesnt matter if it's raining out either, although it is harder to aquire targets at distance.....depending on how hard it's raining. (Already covered the can.)

I have to put equipment to the test, and it's held up so far..... even in below freezing temps. ( I'ts insured....lol)

What... No bayonet? You could mount one one the end of a suppressor and go ultra stealth on porky.
It would only add another lb. 14.6 lbs seems about right to me for a GPR.

LOL.......:)

No bayonet lugs here. They just get in the way when grenade launcher is installed.......lol

Can you give more details on your rifle pictured in post #28?
Scope?
Rings?

This thread is a riot to read. So a GPR [what ever that is] needs to be a .308 chambered military type gun semi[or full!] auto gun with night vision sights and a silencer. What scenarios are you people imagining?

What does your version look like Jim?

Pics?

And no, it doesnt have to meet my requirements. Just as long as it's chambered in 308, feel free to share yours and your reasons behind your choice if you want to.

FWIW....... I wanted to keep it 308 only for this thread's purpose, as when other cartridges enter the equation, it always ends up in a caliber debate, and/or the inevitable "cartridge best suited to stop a Kodiak bear assault".......lol

I got a better chance of being hit by lightning, bit by a shark, and winning the lottery (not in that order).....all in one day, until someone sends them bears a boat......lol

See guys, I told my FAL was a great GPR; all you had to do was bring up bayonets and grenades for me to show you how my FAL is a very versatile rifle.

My Imbel Combo Device serves as muzzle brake, bayonet mount and grenade launcher in one simple package.

I actually can launch rifle grenades with my rifle, if I had them.

A quick turn of the gas plug to the grenade setting, insert a grenade cartridge in the chamber, place rifle grenade on the combo device and away she goes.

I'm not kidding one bit either.

Here's how it looks in the real world...

Of course I can do like Hockock45 and play around with the practice grenades for fun.
I sometimes do that with my GPR; shoot them for fun, that is...

The rifle he borrowed is a bit different than mine but I think it'll be just as much fun with my Imbel.

The practice grenades are not too spend either...

Grenade Cartridges cost a couple bucks though...

This thread started as one guy telling us what 308 semi-auto he likes for a GPR.
Then he invited us to join him with our opinions of what other rifles we think would also make a good 308 semi-auto GPR, pics are icing on the cake.

Then things went.....well, a little side tracked into bolt actions, Scout Rifles, way off topic stuff, etc.

This was actually a pretty straight forward thread a while back before the nit picking and semantic silliness set in.

I sure have had a good time and I'm pretty sure fragout has enjoyed some moments too.

Cheers guys!

Such hostility and not very "High Road" from some of you. Whether you agree or not, piling on like a pack of feral dogs is very unprofessional. Some of you are not even giving thought to any points fragout has given.

The truth is, a "General Purpose Rifle" is not any one particular configuration. The bolt action 6mm I grew up with was equipped with nothing but a Weaver 4x and a sling, made an excellent GPR for me. Whether anyone agrees or not, I don't care. I also put a Mountain Rifle chambered in 280 Remington to use as a GPR. It too worked very well in that role. Other rifles, including the M14, a FAL, Garand and an AR in 5.56 have served as GPRs. Don't like my choices? Tough. They worked. Get over it. Don't like fragout's choice? Tough. Get over it. You wanna discuss why? Fine, we're adults here. Wanna continue being pissy? There's the door. I'm sure the mods can show you to it. Yes, I'll be using the Report This Thread option

After 8 pages I think one's been beaten to death, resurrected, and stoned back to death. Enough.
