Ideas for an all weather farm gun

Find me an AR upper that runs 38s and I’ll gladly find a use for my extra lower.

I use a suppressed 9mm one here at the house to kill coyotes from upstairs without waking up my wife downstairs.

I do reload. Well, I did reload. I haven't in a couple of years since I bought my farm and had a kid. My favorite loads were with Trailboss. Light loads in my 32 inch barreled 45-70 were more quiet than a 22. I also tried some light 38s and a couple rounds of x39 with Trailboss. I never tinkered enough with the x39 to be comfortable hunting with it though.

Anymore thoughts on a Ruger PC Carbine with one of the magic muzzle devices?

The Ruger PC Takedown 9mm is on my short buy list. It will most likely be the next complete gun I buy. In fact I was reading about it in The American Rifleman last night before I went to bed and have the magazine laying out on my nightstand to keep reminding me to save up for it. I anticipate using it a lot. It will definitely do the job on skunks, coons, opossums, feral dogs, etc. I have no idea what the 9mm performance is a 100 yards. The only reason I did not suggest it is because of your criteria for low cost. A suppressor, tax stamp, extra magazines and good optics are going to put you well over $1,000.00. :what:

In my case it will be worse because also I want a handgun (probably the SR9c) in the same caliber that uses the same magazines. This means I may have to violate my cardinal rule of not selling a gun in order to finance everything. :(

I am also curious about the muzzle devices that reduce the noise but it will not a substitute for a good suppressor.

Blue Brick looked at one of the older Hi Point originals this AM at a pawn shop but best he could do was 175 OTD with 5 spare mags (Some Promags). If it is still there in a couple of weeks I might try again But think he currently wants too much for a used gun and gun no longer made in that model.

I don't think that's a bad price with extra mags, and I have a soft spot for the 'classic' 995 model.

I have the sling you need. Got it here on a pay it forward thread. No clue what it’s called, but it’s on the tag. I will try to look tomorrow. I moved it to one of my 22s today since squirrel season is almost here.
The sling is “The Whole Enchilada”. This thread is almost about food at this point. Cookies, Mexican dishes...

Along the lines of a 357 handy- which I have and like a lot- bought it years ago... I like the 44 mag handis also... I happen to know of a NIB .44 handy that may be available...

I never minded the noise from my Mini-14 that rode along with me in my jeep on the ranch or in my 4WD PU in the desert back-country. :)

Unfortunately I too have done lots of stuff that has negatively effected my wellbeing. Most of it in my younger years though. Try and tell a teenager he’s going to hate the ringing in his ears so bad he can’t hear or understand what some people are saying and see how far that gets you...

I appreciate it but I couldn't justify a 44 right now.

What is there to justify over a .357 for a varmint farm gun over a 357? it does not make much sense in real world use... the 44 will do about anything a 357 would and then some...

Personally, I'd take a 357 Magnum over either a .357 or a 357.:D
Just kidding around tallpaul. I know what you meant, and I agree with you. I too would choose a 44.:)

Unless you have 38's and 357's already and have buckets of brass and ammo for that stuff. Also if you are buying new ammo that cost is likely a little cheaper, however the rifle in 44 will be more inexpensive as they seem to grow on trees and the 357's you just can't find for some reason...people have them and when they sell them you don't seem them go very cheap.

Actually, I already have "buckets of brass" for 38s, 357s, 44 Specials and 44 Magnums. I've handloaded for all 4 of them for more years than I care to remember.:)

Also, it won't be a popular opinion with some of the owners, but the American is a cheap rifle in every sense of the word. I'd much sooner buy a 700 ADL or even Savage Axis.

OK I have to ask... what do you see as cheap in the ruger American rifle? I was under the impression it is designed by the same guy as the savage axis... I thought is was basically the same thing. I was thinking of one as a budget 450 bushmaster deer gun... I know it os not as refined as a high end bolt gun but what do you perceive as garbage? or a problem?
