Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

Northmen:
Looking at the pic I would not be surprised if your gun is a .32 S&W, in which case it is a .32 Safety Hammerless 1st Model manufactured between 1994 and 1902. Serial range for that period was 53252 to 91417. It is still a blackpowder firearm.

I re-checked the caliber and it is .38 S & W. A 9mm round fits nicely in the clyinder. I have a couple of the .38 S & W rounds and they fit except for the base of the cartridge. I am stumped as to why this is.
 
The base of the 9mm case is 9.93mm in diameter. The base of the .38 S&W is 9.65mm. If a 9mm will chamber then the .38 S&W cases you have are out of spec.

Your Model 586-4 Distinguished Combat Magnum was manufactured between August 1994 (BRFxxxx) & January 1996 (CAMxxxx). So 1995 seems certain.

Your Model 28 Highway Patrolman has a serial number that falls into the period 1954-1955. Per the Standard Catalog of S&W the serial range for those years was S103000 to S139999.
The problem is that model numbers were not introduced until 1957, prior to that it was simply the Highway Patrolman. From 1957 to 1960 it was the Model 28, in 1960 the Model 28-1 was released.
My guess is the frame was one that sat on the shelf for some time before being completed, so 1957-1960 is the time period. By 1960 S&W had reached the S207000 range, I find it hard to believe that the frame sat there for that long while another 100,000 frames were completed. So if I had to take a guess I would say your gun dates to 1957 and is one of the first to be stamped with a model number.

Your Model 586 Distinguished Combat Magnum was manufactured in late 1982. AAFxxxx serials shipped in October & ABLxxxx serials shipped in December.

There is a recall out on this model. With some magnum ammunition the primer can flow back into the firing pin bushing. Under the terms of the recall S&W will install a new firing pin bushing and firing pin. They will pay shipping both ways, so give them a call if you want to get your gun done.
If your gun has already been modified there should be an M stamped after the model number in the cylinder yoke cut out.

harley 1886: Your Model 66-1 Combat Magnum Stainless was manufactured between 1977 & 1982. The serial number you have quoted is actually an assembly number used to track parts in the factory. Your serial number should have a K in it, falling somewhere between 10K0001 and 269K999. The serial number will be found on the botton of the grip frame. If your gun has aftermarket or target grips then they may be covering the serial number. The serial number is sometimes, but not always duplicated on the inside of the cylinder yoke cut out.
Check and post the number and I'll give you the year.
The 2.5 inch barrel model 66 was a round butt variant.
 
harley 1986: I mis-read your post. as a Model 66-2 your gun was manufactured between 1982 & 1986. If a gun from 1982 to 1983 then the serial range is 125K000 to 311K273. After 1983 S&W went to a three letter prefix, four letter suffix serial number. Between January 1983 & July 1987 the serial range was ABL4000 to AVB8654. As mentioned above, post the serial number and I'll give you the year.

1973 or 1974. Serial range was D510001 to D659901, so 1974 seems likely.
Still not fully recovered, but I am getting there. I hope you are doing well too, I've enjoyed learning about guns from Germany in your many contributions to the firearms research sub-forum.
 
A new addition to the collection. I think it is a .32 Hand Ejector built on I-frame.

a) caliber -- .32 S&W Long
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle) -- 3 inches
c) grips shape -- Round
d) number of shots/cylinder bores -- Six
e) type of sights -- Fixed
f) serial number -- 6527xx (no letter in front)
g) Model number if it is under the crane. -- No model number stamped

The Doc:
You have a .32 Hand Ejector (Postwar) made in 1956/57. Per the Standard Catalog of S&W the upper sideplate screw was deleted at serial number 6409980 in 1956 and model numbers were introduced in 1957. It should be an improved I frame model with a coil mainspring and no strain screw in the front of the grip.
