strangelittleman: 1959 for your rather early Model 14. The .38 special revolvers never had the cylinders recessed, AFAIK it was only the .22s and the magnum calibers.

Radagast, Thank you for the info.
It was bought off a really nice older gentleman (mid to late 70's) who stated he carried it as an officer in a rather large So.Cal LEA in the 60's & 70's....he never did say which one though....
Kinda makes one wonder what the gent has seen "back in the day"......
The only thing is that the original grips were broken at some point and he replaced them with 70's era S&W factory tgt grips, but I'm not complaining! Thanks again!!

JIM BOB:

The 627-5 Performance center guns were manufactured in 2003 & 2004, per Standard Catalog of S&W, but they are also a cataloged item today. The BCFxxxx serial range would have been used in 1989, if used in sequence. I can only assume that the BCF range is was reserved for the performance center. To get a proper shipping date for your gun you would need to contact Roy Jinks at S&W and pay a $50 fee. Otherwise 2003-2009 is as close as I can give you.

The 686-5 was introduced in 1997 and replaced by the 686-6 in 2001. The serial number ranges for this period given in the standard Catalog of S&W all begin with C, in fact the C prefix was still in use in 2004 when the serial ranges recorded end, so again 1997-2001 is the best I can give you.

ArmedBear: The 10-5 was introduced in 1962 and continued in production until 1977 when it was replaced by the 10-7. The serial number should have a C or a D prefix. If the serial number is D685xx then your gun was made in 1968. If the number you are quoting doesn't have a D or C prefix then it is an assembly number, not the serial number. The serial number will be on the bottom of the grip frame.

The 686-4 was produced between 1993 & 1997, the square butt was deleted in 1996, so 1993-1996 is the definite time period, serial range BRFxxxx was used in August of 1994, so I would guess late 1994.

Thanks, Radagast!

Actual serial for the 10-5 is D906XXX

The gun came with an old aftermarket oversized Pachmayr grip that covered the grip frame. I forgot about that when I looked over the gun. (Original-style service grips should arrive here Tuesday and restore it to the way I think it ought to look.:))

VIctory model S&W

Looking for the DOB of a S&W Victory ser #V103126 Looks to be a Lend - Lease gun in 38 S&W ctg. Has the proof marks for it.

Armed Bear: 1976-1977.

Riss: Vi prefixed guns were produced from 1942 to 1945, yours predates September 1944 when the change over to the SV prefix occurred at serial number 769001, and is probably from 1942 or early 1943.
Technically you have a British Service Revolver, made in the same serial number range as the Victory Model and prior to that in the serial range for Militart & Police model of 1905 4th Change. Caliber was .38 S&W, with a five inch barrel.
If it is a lend lease gun it should have UNITED STATES PROPERTY or US Property stamped on it, and or GHD or WB inspector marks.

ccsniper: 1972.

I have what I think is a S+W .38 Safety Hammerless, 4th Mod w/pinned sight

Looking for birthday info

MJZZZ: The .38 Safety Hammerless 4th Model was manufactured from 1898 to 1907 in the serial number range 116003 to 220000. I would expect your gun to be from the 19th century, but the only way to be sure would be to obtain a factory letter from Roy Jinks at S&W, which will set you back $50.00.
