So I was reading the rules and specifically this caught my eye...

Excluded Modifications

The following modifications are not allowed in any of the above-listed equipment divisions:

5. Disconnection or disabling of any safety device on any gun.

Does this mean that I have to have the stupid mag safety intact? It really messes with my trigger pull and would be a total distraction in a match... I am finally ready to try my hand at competition shooting and this would really be a bummer...

Can some one clarify?

Thanks,
V.

I never shot my hi powers in any sanctioned matches but have at several club matches. No RO ever had any issue with the modification but per the book it is not allowed.

Ah, thanks! thats good to know. I dont think I will be shooting in official matches any time soon so I should be ok.

Thank you!

I sent IDPA HQ an email asking that question. Here is their reply:

Sir,

It would be considered a violation of the “can’t remove safety devices” rule.

it would be a violation of the rules.
even if there is a variant that has no safety, you could not disable the one in your gun for IDPA.

Forgot to ask--why is it a problem again?

In our safety briefs the language actually says "If you're shooting a BHP or another gun with a mag safety, make sure you tell the SO and he will act accordingly".

If the trigger pull is an issue--buy a GLOCK. You don't wanna carry a gun with disabled safeties anyway, right? Get one with the same, suckwater safety on every trigger pull and be happy...LOL

"...Does this mean..." Yep. Go shoot the matches anyway. Shooting any kind of match is great fun. Don't worry about how well you shoot or placing.
"...You COULD have the factory..." The factory is in Belgium. They won't do it anyway. The mag safety is a European quirk that was put in to comply with early '30's European military and police standards. Didn't exist in JM's first design. Mind you, neither did the grip safety on a 1911, as I recall.
A lighter mag safety spring will help.
