IDPA (or even IPSC) around Raleigh, NC???

Looks like a move north is inevitable even though I am not crazy about the idea with all the stupid gun laws NC has and a state income tax to boot and now I can't even find a decent place to go shoot.

Can anyone recommend a couple of clubs around the Raleigh area that have IDPA or even IPSC? We are looking at Apex right now so closer to there is better. I found an IPSC club up north of Raleigh but membership is limited and expensive. I found an IDPA club in Carthage but didn't find much info on it and it's kinda far at 40+ miles down there.

Go to the IDPA website, and check out the IDPA clubs in the area. There is a very active IDPA group at THE RANGE in Oxford, which is relatively close by. Bunch of pleasant, very competent shooters there, with a very nice physical plant -- including a club house, cars for scenarios, etc., etc. You could do a LOT worse. Frank Glover is the man to see. Frank is one of a select few able to provide training to certify safety officers.

There is another club or two within reasonable driving distance, closer to the coast, and one at Ft. Bragg -- with a lot of GI shooters.

There are other IDPA clubs are in North Wilkesboro, Asheville, and our small club in Winston-Salem, none of which are really practical places for you to shoot unless you plan to stay overnight.
 
The Personal Defense and Handgun Safety Center in Raleigh holds IDPA matches (www.pdhsc.com). I drove two hours to visit the store/range last Saturday, and it is a nice facility. I don't know much about the matches, but I was told by another patron the matches are usually pretty good.
 
There are USPSA matches in Creedmore, Carthage, Fayetteville, Southport, Havelock, Salisbury and Statesville. I'm in the Greensboro area and attend most of them each month. If you e-mail me I can put you in touch with the clubs.

Sir Walter in Creedmore runs USPSA, cowboy, highpower, bullseye, and some IDPA with some talk about some hybrid "combat shoots" for all those mad about IDPA rules. I think this club was the one you referred to as having limited membership, but you do not need to be a member to compete, just come and shoot, you will like it. I've been driving dwon from VA for several years to make that match. The Range in Oxford is supposed to be excellent for IDPA and tactical 3 gun, my schedule has not yet allowed me to get there.
 
Another vote for The Range in Oxford. We drive down at least once a year from PA to attend matches there - namely the Carolina Cup in June, but then in the winter, they do three matches in 2 days (2 IDPA matches and a low-light shoot). Great place. Great people.

I live in Raleigh. You'll be shocked at how often you can shoot. It's a great area for the shooting sports.

A good resource is the 'competition' page on the web site of PDHSC (A range on the south side of Raleigh). As mentioned above, PDHSC host an IDPA match the second Saturday each month. http://www.pdhsc.com/competition.htm

The first Saturday each month is an IPSC match at Sir Walter gun club. It may be the range you mentioned 'up north.' You do not have to be a member to shoot. Here's a link to their web site. http://www.sirwaltergunclub.com/
Sir Walter recently added a 'practical pistol' match the third sunday each month. I haven't made one but heard great comments. Lots of good stuff at Sir Walter - check out their website. You don't have to be a member to attend most of the events.

Fourth Thursday each month is Action Pistols at the Wake County Range which is in Apex.

First and Second Sundays is the IDPA match in Oxford - about an hour from Apex. Well worth the drive! On June 11 & 12 the Carolina Cup, a big time IDPA match, is held at Oxford. The range also hosts a 3 gun matche each month.

Additional IPSC and IDPA matches are within a hour. Most listed on the PDHSC web site.
 
Just down the road from you is beautiful downtown Ft. Bragg. It happens that the post plays home to a bunch of the deadliest folks ever to pick up a weapon in the real world, and they go out to play a lot too. Get in touch with :

Thanks guys/gals. This looks a lot more promising than what I was finding on my own. Now, to start tackling those asinine gun laws you folks have there is regard to CCW.

Those videos aren't necessary for the certification class. I do realize there are instructors that only show the video as the "class". I show 'em to re-enforce what I went over with my students. The scenarios in the videos have led to many great discussions in class.

You can go to the NCRPA (North Carolina Rifle and Pistol Association) webpage and look in the left hand column under "NC Places to shoot".

It lists some of the places to shoot in NC with their addresses.
Once you find these places, you can find the rest!

IMHO, PDHSC would not be a bad place to start! NO, I don't work there,
but I have shot there several times. Good people!

I'm a member of Pitt County Wildlife Club in eastern NC.

I just moved here from California about a year ago. Found CCW very easy to get.

Regarding IDPA, only one I know of that no one has mentioned here are the pistol Tuesdays at the Durham county wildlife club in RTP. Their site is way outdated...it says they do a different shoot every week, but the one time I went up there they said they set up an IDPA style shoot every Tuesday. Been meaning to make it up there again.

Also, quick report on this year's Carolina Cup; it was a BLAST! 15 stages and the best BBQ I have ever had. About 230 shooters showed up from locals to people from as far as Boston, PA, AL, TN. S&W even donated 4 giveaway guns (yup, I won one :D:D:D). All in all a really great time...can't wait for next year!
 
I used to shoot at PD&HSC and The Range back in the late 90's when I was at Duke. Both places were pretty good.

PD&HSC had 2 indoor bays, one with shooting lanes and the other one open. We would shoot 2 stages, then take a break while they changed the bays for 2 more. Took a while, but there were plenty of toys to FF and people to chat with. It was always fun to see the Chapel Hill cops toast hostages (with the insuing jokes about co-ed safety in that town :p

The Range is fantastic, all open bays with a rudimentary house and some vehicles. I'm sure it has been significantly improved. Real fun to shoot in the snow, I can tell you that!!

I think there are some class three matches near Bragg. I've been to a few other ranges in the area, including one nice one in Cary, IIRC.
