If Glock pistols didn't exist...
the world would be a much prettier place!

I have to disagree that Glock is the AK of the pistol world.

I believe that title would belong to the 1911. After all, the AK isn't made of plastic, it's metal and wood like the 1911.

Plus, the 1911 has many variants and is built in multiple countries just like the AK.

Both the AK and the 1911 have been around alot longer than Glock and can range from the low to the high end price wise.

Or it could even be said that the AK is the 1911 of the rifle world!

(All this from a guy that doesn't even own a 1911.)

Sorry Glock fan boys, I didn't mean to rain on your parade!

The CZ 75 already is. It's issued by more military and police organizations than any other handgun design in the world and is more or less indestructible. The only gun that has been copied more is the 1911. Also, unlike the xd and the steyr, the cz's design is independent of the glock's. If the glock never existed, neither would most polymer handguns.

that's not actually true and never was if you stop and think of the makarov. it's a mistranslation of a misunderstanding of something someone in cz marketing said when they were drunk (though Czech beer dominates). The CZ is great but it's a slide that rides inside the frame (p210, Mle1935A), a good grip shape and a double action trigger that is merely optional because it allows for cocked and locked carry. There's nothing more to it. correct me if i'm wrong.

For better or worse Glock changed the way people think of hand guns.
I think there was a one-two punch of the well publicized XM9 trials and aftermath of the FBI Miami shootout that signaled the arrival of the modern automatic pistol in the US. The Glock is in that story but mostly because it's inexpensive and easy to use like the revolvers they replaced were.

The semi auto pistols that sorta left an impression on me when I became aware of them:

1911/FN high power (ok, before my time, but included for posterity)
Beretta 92
Sig P22x
Glock

That's where it stopped. I don't personally consider any service class pistol design since the Glock to be worth more than a passing footnote in terms of ingenuity, durability, or reliability. So I guess it would be SIG or Beretta, for me. I'll go ahead and choose the Beretta 92, since SIG is now a marketing company.

I know there are plenty of other good reliable guns, but most every lay person can immediately recognize an AK 47. Not may nongunnies will immediately recognizes a CZ or a Steyr, et al. I'm including lay popularity in my decision for whatever reason.
