If R. Lee Ermey was the U.S. Press Secretary

He'd be a great neighbor.

Quiet and peaceful. Lots of stories around the campfire with a few cocktails. Many goodies from places around the world.
Lots of know howto's.
I'd know exactly where I stand with him, no mamby pamby crap there.

And if the SHTF our bunker would be the envy of all.

Never met a bashful Gunny,

Vick

Whatever Ermey was, he is an actor now.

I don't know if I would call his DI routine an "act", but it certainly isn't a complete representation of his personality.

I've seen a TV special on the history of the Marines for which he was a spokesman. His thoughtful insight in the interviews really took me by surprise: he is much more than the loud, in-your-face personality we picture.

I was a DI at MCRD SDiego 74-76.

The DI persona IS an "act" gauranteed to get (and maintain) the recruits' attention and communicate clearly and, uh, directly in an unforgettable/unmistakable manner. It also serves to forcefully insert a "break point" between the recruits' former lifestyle and the behavior/ attitudes we were demanding that they adopt...."instant, unquestioned obedience or orders or the inititive to implement appropriate action in the absence of orders"...the Marine Corps definition of "discipline".

We turned "it" on and off as required.

As for R. Lee Ermy being an idiot???? For a former broke d*#k Staff Sergeant of Marines (or GySgt...whatever floats your boat) he's not doing too shabby. I'd be willing to bet that for any of us to have him as a next door neighbor we'd probably have to move up to a better neighborhood. I'd also bet he's had the chance to feel up a lot more hollywood movie stars than all of the rest of us put together. He also gets to "play" with all of our dream toys anytime he wants to...and gets PAID (Big time) for doing it!

You go, Guns! More power to 'ya!!!

Moondoggie,
Master Gunnery Sergeant of Marines, Retired

R. Lee may make a lot of people uncomfortable with his generous use of profanity and straight talk, but these days I think his viewpoint is all the more important. These days everyone is too scared to speak up and risk offending someone, and while at times he is a little over the top, he reminds us not to fall into the trap of p.c. bs that is all the rage currently

Idiot? Last time I checked you don't get to be a D.I for being a moron. You pick the best you have to break in the young'uns.
If you think he's funny you should hear the NCO's that deal with the 'young gentleman' at RAF Cranwell (RAF Officer Training). I spent a happy afternoon when 15 sitting near an assault course in the sun learning that 'Sir' is in fact an insult. Fun to watch :) and an interesting reinforcement of the mantra that every junior officer should repeat before sleep. "My senior NCO knows more than I do, my senior NCO knows more than I do....".

Made me realise that I was, frankly, not good enough for that career path.
