this may, or may not make you feel better.

Im just crestfallen that I missed it! :p

The King of The Mountain! Colt 3" Stainless Wilkerson Combat Python $.01 NR

https://www.gunbroker.com/item/847717545

Note the difference between the starting price, and the final price.

Oh my goodness someone really wanted that one! I’d love to see what else the buyer has in his collection if he dropped that much on one revolver.

Just a thought, because that sell price is absurd. Maybe the seller had a good offer from someone in person and decided to sell outside of Gunbroker's website. So perhaps the seller has another account and "bought it now" from themselves so they can turn around and sell it without any Gunbroker fees or just for a better price than they expected to get. I've also heard rumblings that some gunbroker sellers will use a separate account to bid on their own items against someone interested as a way to drive the price up. They basically try to create a fake bidding war. I have actually experienced this. I was bidding on an item and one bidder kept bidding a few dollars higher than me. Eventually I said nope, I'm done. The other bidder won, and the same gun was relisted a few hours later. It's possible there was no gun also, and it was just a scammer trying to get me to send payment for a gun that would never show up.

Or maybe some rich kid with no idea how to spend money just decided they wanted it.

According to the bid history, they had something like 56 bids that were up to around $38K before the last guy just out and bought it, at basically double the highest bid.

Seems to me if they sold it for the BIN price, they'd have to pay the fee on that, wouldnt they? Dont see any advantage to doing that if youre trying to avoid the fees.

Ive given up on Gunbroker, at least from a buyers standpoint. Selling is aggravating too, but at least at some point, I get the money and have always made out OK on what things sold for.

Either way, dealing with people on there is generally a PITA though.

It sounds awful but if I had just that kind of money laying around, I'd buy that and just shoot the heck out of it all I want.
If it's a gun, it was made to be fired.

If I really was going to spend $80,000 on a collectible that I might never shoot, it'd be a original Colt 1847.

That's a good point about the fees, so maybe it is just some rich person who said "Screw it, I want it."

I would shoot it too. But honestly, if I had that much of a disposable income, I still don't see spending it this way. Seems a lot of hungry people, and animals could use the help. But, for all we know this was bought by a billionaire.

Sounds like some billionaires got into a bit of a bidding war, or else there was some shill bidding going on. At any rate it may be a Grail Gun to somebody out there but even if I had the money I wouldn't have spent it on that.

If the seller jacked up the price just because they had a better side deal they would still have to pay the Final Value fees to GB. I haven't looked it up but I bet the final value fee on 75,000 is substantial. I bet it was a legit sale to somebody with a hell of a lot bigger Gun Fund than me.:(

Yep, noted above. I think you’re right.

Keystone is a pretty good seller. I got my old 6” polished stainless Python from him. It wasn’t cheap but it was good.
I got my vintage Remington Rand 1911 from them, at fair market value, there was no shill bidding during my auction, someone with deep pockets just really wanted that Python. That seller always has nice old guns.

...and colt releases new 3" Python round butt for $800 and it turns out to be BETTER than the original...

I know, it wouldn't be $800 and likely won't be better. But it would be funny.

On that sellers list for sale is this older King Cobra, it will be interesting to see what bidding ends at. I have been watching King Cobra auctions all year and the trend I see is they are selling less than what they use to , probably in part to the new King Cobra being produced now. However there will still be some who want a older Cobra as a shooter and the collectors looking for a mint classic Cobra who will bid on them. However as a trend what I once saw most King Cobra going for $2000 and up I know see many ending bid below $1500 over the last year. If Colt comes back out with the Anaconda I expect the same trend.

I can think of a whole lot of other things I would rather of had for that much money. But hey, if you got it and want it bad enough then go for it.:D

If you have that kind of money to drop on a gun you can afford all the other things that comes into your desires list along with that Python more than likely. I'm sure whoever bought that gun has a gun room the size of most people's complete house.

There are some folks out there with, literally, unlimited funds to buy things that we all couldn’t afford as a group combined. 75k on a rare Python? That’s maybe sixty minutes at work for some of these guys.

I used to work for a high end ski boat dealer on the side, we had people who wouldn’t bat an eye driving their 100k 911 Porsche Turbo to the shop and dropping 80k in cash (back then, they’re 125k now) on a brand new boat for their teenaged kids. Off to the stereo shop it would go for a 5k sound system.. then they’re paying the shop a mere $500 bucks for me to tow it out to their party house in Arizona and drop it in the water for them.

Less than two years later they were back, trading it in thrashed and abused for under 20k and buying the kids another 80k+ boat. Same went for cars, motor homes, lavish second houses, etc. Its almost obscene what the big earners can spend money on.

But, it’s their money, so if they earned it legitimately... more power to them. I’d surely spend a LOT more money on different guns if I had it... and I’d shoot them, too :).

Stay safe.
