.270 Winchester.

Because the 7x57 wasn't listed.

And because "SHTF" is a silly concept espoused only by paranoics and commando wannabes. :neener:

Hoppy590, that link you posted had me laughing so hard my eyes are watering.
I'll take my Mosin Nagant 91/30

You can knock down everyone else's target just from the shock wave of your bullet going downrange.

Your sight adjustment goes to 12 miles and you've actually tried it.

You dig your ammo out of a farmer's field in Ukraine and it works just fine.

6.5x55 Swede or .260 Rem. They're pretty much equivalent cartridges.

Second choice would be 7mm-08.

357 Magnum

Ill chose the 357 magnum in a well built lever or pump gun, simply because it will stop a deer if needed and the ammo will work in my 357 revolvers, that give me several easy to operate firearms and only one caliber ammo to grab if the SHTF.

But luckily I am allowed to own more than one rifle so I will continue to buy as many as possible to complete my collection, which right now includes many calibers from 22 to 500, and many many many in between

You're kidding right? I think Katrina and the LA riots are examples of SHTF being a real possibility.

Then again, I bet .270 makes fine anti-looter medicine.

If he's kidding, I seriously agree with him. I don't live in NO or Watts. If something ever DID happen like a "Road Warrior" scenario, nuclear apocalypse or something... ....I see little point in planning on it. I'd hope to be one that fried in the blast and didn't suffer. Sometimes I think some of the "survivalist personalities" I know are praying every night for it to happen. I think they've seen too many early Mel Gibson movies. That's akin to a CCW holder hoping someone will shoot at him so he can use his weapon to kill someone. Funny, but of all the people I know that carry, not one is hoping THAT will happen. They're of the mindset that they will avoid such a thing at all costs! They prepare themselves in case it should happen. If you wish to prepare yourself for the apocalypse in case it should happen, fine, but be aware that getting accosted on the street is FAR more likely to happen than a nuclear apocalypse.

If I survived such a scenario, I am confident that my hunting/sporting guns and handguns will suffice. I don't need no stinkin' AK for such scenarios. If you like shooting AKs and ARs, hey, buy 'em because you LIKE shooting 'em. You need no justification for the purchase. It is your right under the constitution as a citizen to own and shoot said weapons, at least until Nancy Pelosi gets it changed. :banghead:

Meanwhile, if I find myself in New Orleans after the next Katrina, I will have my carry weapon with me. That should be plenty of firepower to see me through the nights until I can get out of that place. But, in reality, when a hurricane is coming, I, like any SANE individual, is getting the hell outta Dodge! Don't need no AK if I run to Dallas! I've seen several hurricanes in my life and never saw a New Orleans situation in the aftermath before. That was an isolated incident in a particularly onerous place to live. I never liked VISITING there, much less living there. At least my Texas CCL is good there now, thank God.

Now then, I think the .357 magnum is the best choice for me, with more thinking about it. I love my bolt guns and the range and capability on game they give me, but most of my shots on game have been taken within .357 carbine range where my land is, at least. It's only been out west where I'd feel seriously under-gunned with the carbine. The caliber gives me a small game gun using my light .38 loads, too, and after all, the lever carbine is the original "assault rifle" for anti-personnel situations. I can't think of another caliber I own in rifles that would allow me to hunt both big and small game, so I've settled on the.357 magnum as my choice, an' I'm stickin' to it this time. :D

I'm only sort of kidding. McGunner did a pretty good job explaining why.

There are folks who keep smoke alarms as prudent precautions. Then there are folks who install fire hoses in every room, keep a turnout coat and boots in the closet, have pictures of all their favorite firefighting gear on their hard drives, and spend hours creating imaginary scenarios in their heads where the world turns into a firestorm and they emerge victorious heroes while all the unprepared "sheeple" suffer devastating consequences.

And that's why the .270 is better than the 7.62 NATO. :neener:

I would take a 30-06 hands down. This caliber can take everything from pronghorn to grizzly bear. Although I personally would not hunt a grizzly with an '06, there are cases where grizzly's have been dropped with an '06. Its the most versatile hunting caliber and remains so to this day.

.308 FAL if I only get one caliber. I used to think of it as an overly powerful anti personnel rifle with no good use, but now that I have one I think its fun to shoot, and does anything a rifle of its type should do quite well.

hey now,I chose 7.62x51mm with M14 not because of "war rifles" in mind of having to fight back hoarding crazies in a world gone amoke but because I love that rifle along with Garand above all and would be my favorite target rifle if I had to make that oh so hard choice of only owning one.

Of course it would be a good war rifle for fighting back those crazy up to no good looting zombified crazies.:p And while not a hunting rifle per say,the M14/m1a could provide food.

My guess is the desired response, is something like, Huh?

And my response is Huh?

I didnt answer because I wasnt sure of specifics. If surpluss dries up, .30-06 will be the MOST prolific centerfire round available in my area, and in areas around me. If we're including surpluss, 7.62 Nato(.308Winchester) will be the round of choice only because of price of surpluss.

As a sidenote : .30-06 is a proven performer in my book; I've been dropping deer scince I've started hunting with an .06'. My current deer rifle- Rem 700 in .30-06. No complaints with 165gr. Remington Cor-Lokt. They make the Bambis go nite-nite ultra quick.;)

I picked the shotgun. For hunting any small - medium size game/bird under 100 yards it's all you need.

Gimme my 30-06!

If I could only have one gun it'd probably be a 12ga shotgun, in spite of the fact that it has little use to reach out and touch someone, but I wanted to stay with the spirit of the thread.
