If, you could have only one shotgun...

I have to agree with OneOuncesLoad. If you're only going to own one, make it a good one or like Dave I would just have the ungliest one on the range. I have a rifle that one friend (?) of mine calls the "...ugliest damn rifle I ever saw...". But it's killed whitetail deer, caribou, black bear, red stag, russian boar, some africa plains game, and one sorry old raccoon.

Isn't owning only one shotgun like playing golf with one club? If I had to own just one shotgun I guess I would take up bowling.

what would it be!?! We were pondering this question at my local sportsman's club last week. Hopefully, it will be interesting to see what you guys choose. Remember, only one gun!

I'm still thinking myself. Hmm, only one... :uhoh:
Only one? Well, that's easy since I've only got one and I'll keep it. My Remington 1100 12 ga. Bought it as my first gun, so it had to do everything from birds and skeet, to squirrels, to deer.

27 years later, and that shotgun has never let me down. Bird shot, trap shot, buckshot, and slugs - it does it all, does it all well, and is practically indestructible.

here's my vintage 70's 12ga 1100 with 26" skeet barrel. I also have the original 28" mod barrel. In my opinion, the greatest autoloader of them all... :)

I'm strictly an upland small game hunter, so I'd choose a nice light 20 gauge SxS with 26" barrels, double triggers, and choked IC/Mod.

I have an 870 Express with 18" bbl. that I have run hard over the past 4 or 5 years, mainly during rabbit hunting (run clean, run dirty, dropped in mud, doused in sweat and creek water, used to beat back briars) but also taken to the range and fired just to stay familiar and competent. That stack of hulls is getting pretty high. It's ugly as home made sin, but I'd be loathe to part with it. Give me a long barrel (which I also have) and I could get by with that gun as my only if I had to.

I recently narrowed down my collection to a single shotgun. Daly Maxi Mag, 12ga 3.5" pump. Used to have everything from an H&R 10ga to an antique 16ga, but found that I valued dependability, availability of ammunition, and simplicity of use to all the flare of whatever else I had, so it all hit the road. I've used this gun for turkey, duck, goose, deer, skunks, rabbits, clays, you name it.

Another vote for the 870. Rock solid reliable. My nieces and nephews will be squabbling over mine when I'm gone. Of course I do have other guns, but it is my SHTF gun.

One shotgun? Not me! But, were I to settle on one, it'd have to shoot 3.5" 'cause that stuff works better on geese and I goose hunt quite a bit. I really prefer a 10, but it's not a good choice if you dove hunt a lot and I do. SO, I guess if I wanted just one, I'd pick a Mossberg 835 Ultimag or MAYBE a Browning BPS 12, but the Mossberg is a bit lighter and quicker to the shoulder and it'd work just fine for me. I really prefer the tang safety for the fact that I shoot southpaw. Either of these guns, though, the BPS or the Ultimag would probably be the compromise I'd make.

Thank God I don't have to compromise, though. I really like my little lightweight SxS 20 for dove and my 10 for geese. My 12s are more versatile, though, I will admit.

One Shotgun...
For everything...
Not which would you rather use for hunting w/e, but he said 1 shotgun.
Hands down, the "One" shotgun I'd have is a Saiga 12. It can shoot anything. Slugs, buckshot, birdshot, steelshot. This gun shoots it all. With interchangable chokes, optional 12 round mags and 20 round drums. There's nothing you wont be able to hunt with this shotgun.

The Saiga would be worthless to me except maybe as a door stop. I hunt, it's what I do. I have handguns for protection and carry them all day, every day (well, two of 'em at a time). Never without a handgun. Saigas are for ninjas. I'm a fudd.

I don't wanna get caught in the marsh with a 20 round drum saiga by a game warden. Besides, it'd handle like crap. I probably couldn't get a limit without ground swatting 'em.

Saigas don't swing well on clays either, which is what I prefer to do, along with some quail and dove. The Saiga would need top be plugged to 3 shells...........I also think they are just ugly

Remington 870 Express...

She's my very favorite gun...

I call her Vera...

Moose23... I will vouch for the Winchester M1300. What a sweet pump action right out of the box. For some reason, I don't see them much at the gunshops I frequent. I have had several, and honestly the only thing I didn't care for so much was the paint like finish on the metal on the ones I owned. I had a "Black Shadow" M1300 if I remember the name right, that was my favorite variation. I would own one again if I could find it.

I'd keep my current Mav 88, but maybe swap out the mag tube for the 8 shot. Then it would just be new barrels for different applications. Rifled bbl for slugs and sabots, 20" smoothbore for HD, 28" smoothbore for trap and bird hunting, and a full assortment of chokes.
