If you had to take a .22LR rifle to a gunfight...

CCI mini mags, because they are super reliable, or Aguila SSS because they hit hard.

Both feed and cycle my 10/22 very reliably.

If I had my choice of 22 guns it would be an American 180! After that I wouldn't care what ammo I had as long as it would go BANG every time. With a cyclic rate of 1200 rpms it would matter what round I was using;-)

Any high velocity solid that feeds reliably because the longest straightest wound channel you can get is your friend in this instance and the solid will give you that.. I'd be concerned about a lack of penetration with any expanding .22 bullet.

CCI Velocitor's - if they still make them, 40gr HP at 1435 fps? Very accurate in my 9422.

They do, but as a hollow point design I don't think they are the best idea.

Shot placement is king, penetration is queen, everything else is just gravy. With piddly little calibers, especially a .22lr, the biggest concern, other than reliability and shot placement, is going to be penetration. I would never choose anything other than a solid/round nose bullet.

40gr roundnose, because they cycle better in a Gatling gun which would be the only 22LR I would want in a firefight :D
No in all reality the 40gr RN is about the only one that approaches the optimal penetration, FBI stats show it is better to have adequate penetration then expansion, and the margins are not small on that either. Stingers, Quick Shocks, and all those won't come close to 14" probably 1/3-1/2 that, in all fairness they were never designed for human sized targets.

I agree, for the most part, but.. There seems to be some 'threshold' when even a soft bullet at sufficient velocity seems to do things that are out of proportion to the bullet or target medium. I'm thinking more along the lines of .223 and '250's, admittedly. (like a light HP punching through some pretty significant steel) This is probably not in play with even the hottest rimfires though.

I'd probably go for either Mini-Mags or Winchester Super-X, since both have worked so well in all of my 22s. 40gr solids in both styles.

It would be a ruger 10/22, a bx25 mag full up, cci minimags or blazer. I'd empty that sucker from groin going up and then run like hell.

There are sooooo many debates as to whether 9MM or 45 automatic is better. Most will say there really isn't much difference. To that end, what difference will the 22LR rounds make between Stinger or round nose, etc. Its a 22LR with limited capabilities no matter what it is loaded with so why consider a load for self-defense?

Fella's;

I do a lot of varminting with my CZ452. If I do my part, it'll shoot MOA at a hundred yards with Winchester PowerPoints. Those clock over my Oehler 35P consistently at 1250 fps. They deliver damm near match ammo accuracy and are extremely effective on the rodents I shoot at.
I'll take what I'm most familiar with, both ammo & gun. A human head shot would be no problem for me & that bullet will most assuredly make life miserable for the target.

Now if the opposition is armed with a conventional military type weapon, all I'm gonna do is either hide or run.

My wife has a Ruger SR 22 and I fill it with stingers and carry it often. It may not knock a man down but they sure as hell ain't gonna like it. The recoil between the stingers and a minimag is noticeable in the little pistol.

My answer would be any ammo that I know work in my 22 rifle. Most likely CCI Blazers because that's what I have the most of, and shoot the most and they are accurate and reliable (and inexpensive up until the last 5 months). Hits count, that's all I care about in a gunfight.

I would use CCI Mini-Mag 40g CPRN. You have to get suffecient penetration if you want to kill anything other than small game. And it better be in a high capacity semi/full auto weapon...

It would be a 40 gr RN. You don't want HP bullets and don't really need that much speed. Often a slower bullet will out penetrate a faster one.
