IL state laws on gunpowder.

I just get started on reloading last week and I'm wondering what laws IL has on smokeless gunpowder and primers. Such as limits on how much I can have at one time and how do I store them legally.

I also heard that a person doesn't need to have a IL FOID card to have gunpowder or primers, but some dealers will ask you for it however.

IIRC (and may be wrong) ... there are some rules or guidelines at federal level ... which are probably stated on the BATFE site .. the exact URL of which I forget right now.

Well I'm more concerned about IL state and local laws. They tend to be more strict then Federal. I know that Kaliforna you are only allowed to have 5 lbs of powder at one time.

If there's a limit in Illinois, I haven't found it.

I did get asked for a FOID card at the last gun show when trying to buy a 1-lb can of 4895. I didn't have it on me (that was the day I discovered I'd lost the fershlugginer thing.) I didn't argue with him about whether the FOID was required for powder; I figured he was probably already trying to memorize my face in case I was running a sting or something, and he wasn't going to take legal advice from me.

Still waiting for my new card to arrive, without which I can't go shooting. :banghead:

Bummer, The range I'm going to, a person doesn't need a FOID card to shoot the range's guns. It's in East Alton on Powdermill road. You do need to buy thier ammo however.

In Illinois the FOID card rules, sadly

According to two FFL shops I buy at regularly.

1. No limits on reloading supplies, as far as anyone knows (but if you ordered a truckload of powder, or fertilizer and lived in the Lincoln Park, you'd probably get a phone call or visit from somebody in Homeland security pronto)

2. Yes, you must show the stupid FOID card for anything that goes "bang" powder and primers are included.

The company I ordered the powder and primers from didn't even so much as ask me for my DL/State ID much less my FOID card. They just shipped the stuff right to me.

I must be thinking of NJ, MA, NYC, or Maryland. I have heard that one state does limit how much smokeless powder you can have.

If I order online, I have to pay a hazmat fee. It's more cost effeicte to ship more then I really need.

Almost every state limits powder possession, usually in their state fire codes. Virginia's limit is 15# of blackpowder and 20# of smokeless,as well as 10,000 primers.

I'm more concerned about what the IL state crimenanil code limits. Like it maybe a fenoy to have more then an X amout of powder and primers... Of cousre unless they catch you redhanded this would be rather hard to enforce.
