IUKA ILLINOIS
I was reading an article in the Southern Illinois paper last night at work and they they had an article on the under eighteen bill in the house at the moment.

They stated that it is already state law that if you have children under 14 that your guns have to be locked up.

First time I ever heard of this, is it true?????

And a question if it is, If I choose to lock my SONS guns up do I give him the key.

He is twelve and has his own weapons which he uses when shooting at a club close buy.

(720 ILCS 5/24‑9)
Sec. 24‑9. Firearms; Child Protection.
(a) Except as provided in subsection (c), it is unlawful for any person to store or leave, within premises under his or her control, a firearm if the person knows or has reason to believe that a minor under the age of 14 years who does not have a Firearm Owners Identification Card is likely to gain access to the firearm without the lawful permission of the minor's parent, guardian, or person having charge of the minor, and the minor causes death or great bodily harm with the firearm, unless the firearm is:
(1) secured by a device or mechanism, other than the firearm safety, designed to render a firearm temporarily inoperable; or
(2) placed in a securely locked box or container; or
(3) placed in some other location that a reasonable
person would believe to be secure from a minor under the age of 14 years.
(b) Sentence. A person who violates this Section is guilty of a Class C misdemeanor and shall be fined not less than $1,000. A second or subsequent violation of this Section is a Class A misdemeanor.
(c) Subsection (a) does not apply:
(1) if the minor under 14 years of age gains access to a firearm and uses it in a lawful act of self‑defense or defense of another; or
(2) to any firearm obtained by a minor under the age of 14 because of an unlawful entry of the premises by the minor or another person.
(d) For the purposes of this Section, "firearm" has the meaning ascribed to it in Section 1.1 of the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act.

Illinois does indeed have a safe storage law. I've never studied it in depth. I believe it uses vague terminology to cast some doubt as to what constitutes compliance--what is access, after all?

another attempt by daley's minions to hassle law abiding gun owners in illinois.

Times are a changing....

I remember when my did would leave on an out of town fishing trip or work, he would load up the Itcha 37 with 00 Buck and made sure I had my Model 10 loaded and by my bed! I was 10-12.

I am SO GLAD I don't live in Illinois anymore. I currently have 4 loaded handguns in my home. Mind you, currently, my sons can't reach them. But as they get older, and start showing more common sense, that situation will change.

Unfortunately, I don't hunt, but since Michigan now allows 12 year olds to go hunting, I intend to get a friend to take my boys out, when they reach lawful age to do so.

still a silly law and I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted for it

In the novel Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, there is a part where Hank Reardon is in front of a group of politicians and he pretty much says the same thing.. The pols reply was something along the line of" Make no mistake Mr. Reardon, we don't want you to follow the law. Where is the use of that? We want you to break the law. The only way to rule free men is to turn them into criminals then we can cash in on their guilt"

Now I know that that is not verbatim, so please don't flame me, I lost my only copy and haven't got another yet.

That book was written in the fifties I believe. The stuggle against oppression has been going on a long time.

Why cant they just leave gun owners alone?
It's for the children. Just like the bill introduced to require kids in schools to wash their hands before eating. It's to protect the dumb ones. Darwin didn't have our legislators when he developed his theory. Besides, if we don't protect the dumb ones from killing themselves at a young age where are the next generation of legislators going to come from.

I have never heard of anyone being prosecuted for it
There have been a few charged. I never kept up with them to see if prosecution went fully forward, if they were pled, or if dismissed.

I grew up in Chicago. Had access to guns at an early age.

Never occured to me to do a Columbine, rob a store, or do something equally nefarious.

Have reason to believe there was - and for all I know, there probably still is - widespread noncompliance with Chicago's gun laws, particularly concerning registration.
