Illuminated vs non illuminated

I have Leupold VX-R scopes on all my hunting guns. The motion sensor on/off is perfect for low light and daylight shooting as well. So yes to illuminated. Better to have the option of illuminated and not need it then to not have it and wished you did have it
I had a Firedot VX-R on my .30-30 I took on a black bear hunt. At dusk under heavy pine trees in the rain, black cross hairs disappear totally against a black bear. I mean totally gone.

The Firedot was awesome. As noted above, it turns itself off after five minutes if there is no motion, then automatically turns on when the rifle is moved. Excellent battery life

I’ve used older scopes where the whole reticule lights up. I found it distracting. The tiny bight dot is perfect. I’ve got it in my 2-12 VX-6 on my 7 mag.

In scopes under $1k(which is all I have) I believe I like the Leupold Firedot system best. I only have one, a VX-R 2-7x33 with Firedot 4, but I really like it.

My first illuminated was a Sightron and I liked it from the get-go. While I’ve tended to skip the feature for cost considerations the Sig I ordered tonight includes it. I can think of one particular hunt illumination came in handy as I took my largest whitetail to date with one. Before I switched it on the crosshairs were invisible, after, it was bang flop.
