I had a Firedot VX-R on my .30-30 I took on a black bear hunt. At dusk under heavy pine trees in the rain, black cross hairs disappear totally against a black bear. I mean totally gone.I have Leupold VX-R scopes on all my hunting guns. The motion sensor on/off is perfect for low light and daylight shooting as well. So yes to illuminated. Better to have the option of illuminated and not need it then to not have it and wished you did have it
The Firedot was awesome. As noted above, it turns itself off after five minutes if there is no motion, then automatically turns on when the rifle is moved. Excellent battery life
I’ve used older scopes where the whole reticule lights up. I found it distracting. The tiny bight dot is perfect. I’ve got it in my 2-12 VX-6 on my 7 mag.
