I was talking with a good friend of mine the other day and he proposed a trade. He wants to trade me a NIB M&P 15 sport, for my WASR 10/63, 7 mags, +/- 600 rounds of 7.62 (80 rounds is steel core or tracer the rest is soft point or HP Russian) a cheapo red dot and the mount.

I've had the AK a while and rarely shoot it any more, but I enjoy it when I do. I'm going to keep at least one AR or AK style rifle, but I seriously doubt I'll ever have two because their not my thing when it comes to rifles. I don't currently own anything in 223, mainly because I feel the caliber is an insufficient caliber for the hunting I do, which is part of why I like the Ak. I'm pretty fond of the 7.62.

Just can't decide what to do, if I make the trade I'll wind up with a decent Leupold on the AR then it will live in my truck waiting on possums, dillars, and yotes in the pasture. If I keep the AK I'll have, basically have what I have now, which is a super cool, disposable, SHTF rifle with 13 fully loaded mags, steel core, tracers and some other stuff. I also don't know how good the M&P 15 sport is. I do know it is more or less a budget model but I don't know if it is junk or not, as I know nothing about an AR. Their price and caliber has kept me away from them.

Right now I'm leaning toward the M&P but I still need to read up on it a bit and convince myself it's not junk. And accept the fact that I'll never have the ammo selection and accessories for it that I have for the AK, I know it's available but I know this will become a truck gun within a year.

Do a temporary trade, for a week or two. Try it out and see.

I think the AR would be more useful, being more accurate and in a caliber for which you seem to have more targets. ;)

On a different angle...Doing 'business' with a friend/family can sometimes ruin or put a damper on the relationship. You said he asked for the trade, but what if he is unhappy for whatever reason a year down the road? Now, if you have traded with him before, then why not. I just *try* to keep business separate from family and friends, and I know it has kept me out of trouble.

My question to him would be why is he wanting to get rid of his AR? I personally would not even consider the trade because its a AR15, I prefer the AK-47 or truly the AKM. Its a muck better rifle design and the round is much more lethal on two and four legged vermin. Stick with the AK, it will do what it was made to do "keep you safe" when the zombies come.
