Just completed a complete refinishing of the stock of my Romak3. Although I love the Romak3 the stock needed a little TLC and a little "detail" work.

I had refinished the laminated stock on my SAR-1 with Tru-oil walnut stain and although it looks better, it did not give me the improved look I desired. For my Romak3 I decided nothing less than a black finish would do but I didn't want to use spray paint so I opted to get a spray can of black truck bed liner at the local Advanced Auto store for $13. I removed all the wood furniture except for the upper handguard where I contented myself with just masking off the metal parts. Even though the instructions called for a temperature of 68 degrees or better I was limited to about 55 degrees but decided to proceed anyhow.

The spray liner pretty much covers and applies just like spray paint but you cannot let the spray build-up like regular spray paint so you have to aim well when spraying the ventilation slots and all the nooks and crannies. The "pebbled" look can be controled by the distance you hold the can away from the stock I held mine about 18 inches away to gain modest pebble grain look. I let the stock "cure" for about 36 hours although it was fairly dry to the touch after 2 hours. I used a black fine tip Magic Marker to touch-up the ventilation slots and around the edges of the stock, it blends in perfect. I spray painted the pistol grip cap flat black.

The next item that has always seemed "unworthy" of the Romak3 was the bent wire sling holder in the buttstock. I pulled the buttplate off after removing the wire sling holderholder and spent 15 minutes filing down both sides of the metal stud that would permit the attachment of a standard detachable sling swivel. I was rewarded with 100% success, the "new" sling swivel looks much better than the wire one plus its much stronger. The black pebble stock helps to conceal the poor wood to metal fit and just plain looks meaner and better built. Maybe next on my list will be to refinish the metal parts with a good quality semigloss black spraypaint. I'm a Happy Camper
