Imr 4227

I cannot find much for powder in my area. I want to load full power 357 magnum. I found a pound of this. I have 158g LSWC at home. Can I make full house rounds with this powder? I only saw data for a 140 grain bullet on the website.

If you can find load data, then you can do it. If there isn't load data, then you probably shouldn't try it.

I started two threads on this exact situation over the past two weeks!
Here is the readers digest version. it is very similar to H-110 my favorite magnum powder. You need to be on the upper end of the power level to avoid powder/ash fouling up the gun. it has similar recoil to H-110. I am using 158 grain SWC lasercast lead.

I am currently up to 15.3 grains and the best accuracy is at the top end.

Thanks, that is helpful. Based on your experience, do your heavier loads feel like full house 357 magnum loads? Also, there was not a lot on magnum vs small pistol primers. I have a ton of small pistol but no magnum small pistol. Also hard to find. Can I get away with the small pistol primer or do I need a magnum.

Another thing is that I have 158gr LRNFP coming out of my ears. Any experience using this powder with that particular bullet? I guess it would be the same or similar to a LSWC. They are not cast.

You may have problems with "full house" because you are using lead
bullets, not jacketed.

I too have a thread out there on my experimentation with 4227 and lead 158 grain bullets. Bottom line for me, all things considered, is around 16 grains with a good crimp. Stout load, very little 'ash' left, and really good accuracy.

Also, in my Smith 686, I've never had an issue with leading (no gas check 18bhn) into the 1400 fps range...

I agree with the rest. I'm up to 15.5 right now. It is full house loads for me. I also am going to work towards 15.8-16.0 over the weekend in my gp100. I have gotten really tight groups as I got towards the book max. I'm still a bigger fan of H-110 but I'm not paying current prices. I can grab 4227 for 19.99 right now at my local store

FYI, you can use H4227 data for loading IMR 4227. If you plug in 357 Magnum RIFLE in Hodgdon's data center they have data for both and the numbers are exactly the same, just like they do with 296/H110, 231/HP38 and 760/H414.

I’ll second the small rifle primers with 4227. Been using that combo for many years.

Small pistol primers work fine for me.
More important to use enough powder to keep pressure up and a good firm crimp.

Great accuracy and enough power.

I just reloaded the IMR4227 15.5 gr and 158 gr FN Berry bullets for my 357. I will be testing them next week when I go to the range.

Imr 4227 needs magnum primers to help with ignition.

Back in the late '60s when my dad & I started reloading for his .357mag, we used both IMR4227 and 700x.

We only used regular small pistol primers and never experienced any ignition issues.

Because of this thread, I might just go ahead and try IMR 4227 in .357 Magnum since I have two kegs of it for .44M, and I really don't want to use up my remaining supply of 2400 which cannot be found ANYWHERE. Good info here, thanks THR family.

I got lucky and found h110 yesterday. I too will use up the rest of imr4227 and get back to business with my favorite powder. Yes I too cannot find 2400. I do admit 4227 is as close to h110 in the high end I have found. H110 burns more completely and cleaner with a touch more flash!

I too can't find 2400, so was turned onto 4227 by this thread. If you can live with the residue, you'll love the results. Best accuracy results will be found 15 grs up. I've been through 4 cans so far.

Stuff the 357 mag case full of 4227, no matter the bullet weight.

I shot 15.5 grain loads this weekend. Shot great but still have ash/residue. I will probably use of the bottle and stick with h-110. I do love the accuracy but will keep 4227 as a backup powder when I get in trouble.


Anyone use 4227 in 44mag? Pistol or rifle???
