Just bought a new Marlin 1895 Cowboy Rifle in 45-70 and looking for some starting loads using SR-4759.

Having been using 27 grains and a 405 Bear Creek bullet with my Sharps with no problems.

This rifle is much lighter than my Sharps and I don't want to try one of those loads first!

Will be using the Rifle at 50 - 100 yards at cowboy side matches.

Looking for suggestions that won't rip my shoulder off ...

I'm well into experimenting with a H&R buffalo classic single shot. So I know where you're coming from. Todays range time will be devoted to testing a 405 grain lee .458 flat nose hollow base lead bullet. I just got the mold on thursday, made some boolits and have them ready to fire today. Load is a work-up using H-322 43.0 to 46.5 grains. They will require that I use a past pad to keep the shoulder bleeding to a minimum!:what::eek:

Since your Marlin can use the same pressure levels that my H&R can, those loads will do okay in your rifle. I would think the SR4759 loads would be a lot less in the recoil department. I loaded some 300 HP hornady jacketed with 26.0 SR4759 in the H&R, they were very light in recoil. 27.0 behind a 405 would recoil more, but I doubt it would be unpleasant to shoot, especially from the standing position.
