a different home defense handgun~!:uhoh: As most of you folk's know,
I have used my old duty weapon ( a .45 caliber West German SIG-SAUER
P220A) in the past; and I'm look'in to offically retire it from active duty.
I would like to stay with the .45 ACP caliber, and have several other
choices to choose from. Those being, 2x Springfield WW-II G.I. replicas
(one parkerized, and one stainless), a Kimber Stainless Ultra Carry II,
a first production run Springfield XD- .45 ACP, and my newly acquired
Les Baer Thunder Ranch Special. I need your thoughts and opinions,
but I'm leaning towards the Baer cuz it is equipped with factory night
sights. Many thanks for taking the time too study this situation~!

Dan,

Without even a second thought, I'd reach for the Les Baer if I heard a bump in the night. The TRS, as you mentioned as night sights which will help very much, and since you stated that you shoot the Baer well, I don't see why not use the Baer as your nightstand gun.

I use a Colt 1911 for my nightstand gun, only because I don't have a gun with nightsights yet, but that'll soon change. Once I get my 1911 with night sights, I'm sure I'll switch to that as my nightstand pistol :)

But hey, you got a great selection to choose from, why not do Mon - Wed SIG P220, Thurs - Friday XD45, Saturday and Sunday Les Bear :D

Go with the TRS. ;)

I use a XD45 with a Streamlight M6 for my HD pistol and I have no complaints. I havent had to use it except for clearing my home the other night but it was nothing. As you know the XD45 feels great. I wouldnt personally own a HD pistol w/o at least a light attached but prefer a light/laser. Good luck!

Dan,

Depends on how well you wish to "use" the gun. As in, what marks or bumps will you put upon it and how will you feel about it in the morning.

The LB is an expensive firearm, great workmanship, and nicely finished. Will you be okay when the first blemish comes upon it's fine finish? Any working firearm will tend to pick up blemishes if used and kept out.

The SF XD series are cheaper then the LB's and maybe less thought will be given to keeping it prestine and not minding the first blemish to appear.

Me personally, I have a Kimber that shows bad wear marks as well as an FM that is showing the same. Why, because I carry them and use the FM as my bedside gun. I have a TR .44 magnum that I really love, and trust, but I won't use it for general carry or use, it's more of a collectors piece that I drag out of the safe every now and then. I would be abit upset if I marked it up with general use. The same goes for an engraved 1911 that I picked up at auction that I don't think ever left the box it was in, rosewood presentation box. I just can't bring myself to use it as a tool but look at it as more of an art piece.

I tried the tritium sights option at one point but have since gone back to plain dots or black sights. I prefer to rely on a hand-held light for night time use and practice with it often. Not to say a light and night sights are mutually exclusive, but I'd say any of your options are workable regardless of the sights.

Personally, I am a 1911 guy, but I have to wonder: Why do you find it necessary to "retire" the 220? From what I have heard, they are darned near indestructible. Does it need new springs, an overhaul, etc? I would think that getting that weapon back in service would be more cost effective than replacing it.

Why retire the SIG? Or is it more of a vacation? Has your 220 just seen better days? Maybe a duplicate would work too? If none of the above & you're sticking what you currently have available, I'd go w/ the Les Baer

You can't go wrong with the Baer, of course, ole buddy. Just wonderin - like everybody else - why Mr. SIG/Sauer P220 would be retiring his favorite far'arm?

Your bud :)
