I just got a Mossberg 500A Persuader/Cruiser (pretty sure it's the Persuader, the stock sticker had both separated by a /), got it from Dick's with the desert BDU pattern finish. Some questions, since this is my first shotgun. Looking through the Mossberg website, it looks like the Persuader/Cruiser ordinarily comes with a pistol grip only kit. Mine did not, is that something that was missing or does it not come with that particular model?

And what does the "A" appelation on the model number mean? What is the difference between the 500A and 590A? are the 590s the Mariner models?

This shotgun will be used primarily as a bedside weapon, but I will also attempt to shoot some clays with it, with a friend and one of those inexpensive little red clay throwers.

are all 2 3/4" 9 pellet 00 Buck basically the same, or is there a strong difference between the LE loads like Winchester Ranger and the "ordinary" loads like the Remington I bought with it?

Thanks!

IIRC, the A indicates it's a 12 gauge.

Re buck, only testing with various rounds will indicate which rounds pattern the tightest. Use that one when it shows.

As for the PG, forget it. Works way better in the movies than in real life.

500A = 12 ga
500C = 20 ga
500E = .410

The 590A1 is a Military version of the 500. It comes with a heavy wall bbl, metal trigger guard & safety, Bayonet lug, ghost ring sights optional and a different mag tube setup than the 500. The 500 has a closed mag tube The standard 590 has a standard bbl, plastic trigger guard & safety, heat shield & GRS optional and all the rest above.

Wow, the 590A1 sounds like an awesome shotgun! Is there any way to get ghost ring sights on the regular 500? how about some sort of tritium front bead?

You can buy the GRS set from Mossberg and other places. The rear mounts on the receiver in the tapped holes. The front has to be soldered or brazed on. The 590A1 comes in two versions 20" bbl 8+1 capacity and the 18.5" bbl law enforcement shotgun 5+1 capacity but can accept a tube extension. The 590A1 with a 20" bbl is a heavy shotgun and many find that the standard 590 or the 590A1 18.5" bbl is a better choice.

...are the 590s the Mariner models

Yes and No. Mossberg makes Mariner versions of the regular 500A with their Marinecoat nickel finish and black synthetic stocks. They also make a Mariner version of the 590. The main differences between the 500 and 590 are the magazine and barrel.

I believe the Cruiser has a pistol grip only and the Persuader has a standard stock and the pistol grip kit to give you the option of converting it to Cruiser configuration. I also thought the Persuaders all came with the kit. Who did you buy it from? They may have filched the grip kit to sell on eBay. Or maybe Mossberg doesn't include them anymore and they just haven't updated the website.

I bought it from Dick's, so if it was supposed to come with one, not that I am likely to use it, but it is nice to have the entire package.

NG VI, you might want to go back to Dick's and ask about the pistol grip. They might have just misplaced it in the stockroom.

Aha! Dick's called me back today and asked me to initial something on my 4473, and I asked about the pistol grip kit, they said to ask about it when I go back in and they will check.

It would be a neat thing to have, plus the 20" barrel and regular stock is quite long, so the pistol grip would be way better inside my apartment.

Hmm, I will have to get back to you on that. I want to say standard, for what its worth the sticker on the stock calls it the Persuader/Cruiser, not sure if they just use the same sticker for both or what, when I went in last night the gun guy told me I got the right box, they do not come with a PGO kit, at least not the ones they had.

is an 18"/5+1 or a 20"/7+1? The 7+1 is the "riot/special purpose" model, as it is called.

I got the riot/specpurp one. Paid 300 and some change after tax, and it came with a pistol grip. I don't see why yours wouldnt have one either unless it was modified or messed with in some way out-of-box.

By the way, if you have the 7+1, be sure to remove the drowel from the mag tube so it can hold its full capacity.

Oh, then mine is the special purpose 20" 7+1. I got the dowel out right away, four 2 3/4" shells in a tube that should hold seven bugged me. For whatever reason mine did not come with a pistol grip kit, and the guy at the desk said they did not come with them. weird, oh well I guess. Maybe I should shoot Mossberg an email and see if they'll send me one. My aprtment is really too small for the full length with the stock.

FWIW, Mossberg lists the Mariner as coming with a pistol grip. The one I bought at Dick's didn't come with one. No loss. If quarters are that close, I'll just tuck the butt of the gun under my arm.

I'm pretty sure that if it says "Persuader/Cruiser," it should come with the pistol grip. That's what makes it a "Cruiser." That's how they're identified on the Mossberg website. It doesn't mean that Dick's got them that way, though; it could be Mossberg's fault. Try e-mailing them and see what they say.

The Persuader/Cruiser is a kit and should come with a pistol grip. Im not sure about your local gun laws though? I had found out from a friend that works at the "Gun Room" a local firing range and store, that the Gun Room was keeping the pistol grips and installing them on custom's they were making at the store.It would make sense for them to just call it the Pesuader. But it could just be the box or a Typo?

Email sent, I wouldn't view it as a loss if it wasn't factored into the $320 price tag. I got mine on sale for $280, but I still would rather have the complete set. Besides if I ever decide to sell it (highly unlikely) the resale value can only go up on mall ninjas with a PGO installed.

Kyle- Do you mean the Gun Room at Dick's? Do they have a "gun room" at Dick's? The Mossberg sticker attached to the stock is what named it a Persuader/Cruiser, and it would be incredibly sheisty of a shop to break open gun packages and use spare parts from them to build other guns. Kind of like a shop taking XD gear and selling it individually, pistols without the gear. Kind of unethical.

it is still a cruiser/persuader, since you can still simply change out the stock for the PG. Problem is, there are 20" models that come standard without the PG, and run ten bucks cheaper than the ones that do from what I just noticed (Mossberg does offer one with and one without - go figure). So, if you don't get your pistol grip, its a cheap fix.

NG VI, I think Kyle was referring to an independent gun store. I don't see Dick's doing something like that, if only for the fact that I don't think they do any custom work or special builds. But it could be an individual employee doing it--you never know.

That's what I'm thinking, either way if I ever do decide to add one on and Mossberg doesn't send one on them, I can always get it later without runiing a big bill. It is the desert camo one though and to get an identical PG would be tough. If the finish isn't going to match I would probably find an aftermarket PGO kit.
