Indiana Residents... I have questions....

Hello all,

I may have escaped from the clutches of IL!!! I am in Bloomington right now for college and if my Finacial Aid goes trhough and covers most of the schools cost I will be staying here in Indiana. I am wondering what the permit process entails. I will have an Indiana drivers license with my new Indiana address on it by next Friday if my aid goes through and everything works out.


And if I need to disclose any expunged arrests or if they have to contact any references. Basically my family is very anti gun and probably wont like the idea of my carrying a gun (let alone anyone so its not against me personall). Would they have to find out? Cause it will cause a big unwanted headache that I really dont need right now.

If I just send the application in will their be any more to it other than the state of Indiana does a background check? Once the check goes through they will just send me my permit in the mail? I can legally buy guns at the gun store and have never had any problems with that. I am just wondering about the CCW permit process now.

You go to the local police station, fill out a form, pay your fees, get printed, and then wait a few weeks.

If you are 23 years of age or under have have offenses that would have been felonies if you were an adult, then you can't get a permit. If you kept your nose clean before you were 18, then you get a permit.

This link is not 100% up to date, some new laws (larger fees are the biggest difference) went into effect July 1st, but it will get you started.

Thanks. I have no felonies. Just some bs from when I was a little dumb and hanging with the boys. It was all back in 2001 and prior to that.

Will it matter if I have been in Indiana for a week or so when I apply? Also they wont notify anyone backhome and nobody there will find out?

I didn't find the statute that defines an "indiana resident", whether the resident has to be living in state for a certain number of days or just have an address in state. So just ask the clerk at the police station when you go fill out the forms. You will have to fill out how long you have been an indiana resident on the form.

Go ahead and pick the lifetime carry permit, if you fail to get the permit they will refund most of the money anyway. If you are that short of cash now, then get the 4 year one.

Very simple process, just need to get the form notarized (any bank will do it, maybe for a fee if you don't have an account with them), and you will need to pay 2 fees, 1 for local PD, and 1 for state police later. You will have to state on the form all previous criminal violations.

The local PD will do the background check, and if everything is ok, they will either call you to come back and mail the application to the state police with your state police fee, or they will mail you the application and tell you to mail it to the state police with the fee included.

Should take about 2 weeks for local PD to do their stuff, and 2 more weeks for state police to look at the application. Maybe a little slower.

Pretty sure they don't use references, and won't notify your family back home. This is Indiana, not PRI.

Edit: For hunting/fishing licenses, an indiana resident is a person who has lived in Indiana continuously for a period of 60 days proceeding the date of license or permit purchase. Unsure whether that definition holds for handgun permit.

Looking closely at the law, looks like you don't need to be a resident to obtain an indiana permit.

If I knew 7 years ago what I know now and was as self involved in RKBA I would be very picky about where I landed. In the sense of those things around medium sized towns I would not live in Bloomington city limit.
I would Find an apartment in decent condition out in the county. I do believe you need to prove you live in Indiana so a drivers liscense would be in order. Not sure of what the time of residency is.
Living out of city limits allows you to bypass the apointed and anoited cheif Law Enforcement Officer of a municipality and get the respect you better deserve at the Sheriff Dept. Some areas of Indiana may be a reversal of this with less questionable issueing practices.
Final word is from the ISP firearms division. No word home or to the folks in Springfield unless the ISP finds cause to look closer at your background check. You can spend your money on the 4 year or the lifetime. A new lifetime permis is 125 this year but expect some work over the next 2 years to see that reduced.

In Indianapolis (Marion County) and maybe others, call ahead to make sure you know what to bring, the form must be notarized, in smaller towns, that aren't so busy (like mine), the clerk will watch you fill out the form and notarizations isn't needed.

May be a good idea to "decompress" freom liberalism gradually in Bloomington. It's probably as near to IL as you can get. From what I understand the local LE is one of the tougher to deal with for carry permits. Good luck.

BPD hard to deal with? Never had a problem with BPD in undergrad (I lived on Second and Dunn near that IGA [if it is still there] just south of the law school).

Got my LTCH in high school and then had to renew senior year of undergrad. Went in, filled out the application by hand and gave it to the nice lady who called me "honey". Heck, I even asked for a BPD patch and they gave it to me.

Of course, this was early '90s, so maybe something has changed???
