Any suggestions on an inexpensive home defense shotgun that could be used for dove hunting as well?

I think there are packages where you can get a Remington 870 or a Mossberg and it comes with both a long and short barrel?

This is one situation where Wal-Mart is just about unbeatable. You can order Remington 870 Express or Mossberg 500 "combo" packages through them (if they don't have them in stock, ask to see their catalog, and you'll find them there). These come with a short smoothbore barrel (sometimes with rifle sights) for slugs, buckshot, etc., and a longer "traditional" barrel with screw-in chokes for clay and bird use. (Just don't order the combo package with a rifled barrel - these are for slugs only, and useless for anything else.)

I'm a diehard Remington fan, but I have to admit that if I had to choose between an 870 Express and a Mossberg 500, I'd take the Mossberg every time. Now, if only the Wingmaster were available at a reasonable price in a combo kit... :D

You can also look around gunshops to find used guns. Dave McCracken mentioned in another post that he'd heard of a Wingmaster combo in good condition - maybe he can find another one for you? Oh, Daaaave... :D

For cheap, I would go with the Mossberg 500 combo. When I was in Virginia about 4 years ago, I bought mine at Sports Authority for around $200. Haven't had a problem yet.

Good advice so far, hope I don't ruin the streak.

Cheapest if it can be found, is a police turnin 870 or 500. Probably ravaged on the outside, near new inside. Pick it up for less than $200 and look for a longer barrel when you can afford one.

The shorter barrel works fine for casual clays and skeet, though trap requires more choke than IC or none, the two most common police choices.

Combos are rare on the used shotgun mart. If one comes along with a short barrel, either bead sighted or with open sights, and a long barrel with vent rib and choke tubes, grab it forthwith.

Don't worry about 3" capability now. 2 3/4" shells will suffice for everything mentioned.

HTH...

What about the pump guns that you see in the Shotgun News that are about 170.00? They are listed as Remington style or something like that.

Who makes them? Are they any good?

If they aren't made by Remington, they won't have the same kind of quality control. Norinco and a couple of other companies (I seem to recall one in the Phillippines, and perhaps one in Indonesia?) make knock-offs of the 870, and they're OK, I guess, but as with all cheap imitations, you get what you pay for. Also - what about parts if anything breaks? I'd rather get the "real deal", even if it does cost a bit more...

Also, the Remingtons don't have to be expensive. Check out this auction on Gunbroker... I found it a couple of minutes after it closed (with no takers), and I'm still kicking myself for not seeing it earlier. A Wingmaster for $125??? Man, I hope he re-lists it!

I was looking for a HD shotgun for the wife a few weeks back (she decided to spend the money on a fish tank instead  ). I hit every pawn shop I could find and found a flock of rem 870's moss 500's and win1300's for under $150. Some were in good enough shape that I'm tempted to go back and get one for meself.

This would do nicely......

Just pick up a long barrel for the sporting stuff. They make the same gun above without the magazine extension for a bit cheaper.

Stick to the big names, Remington, Mossberg, Beretta, Benelli, Ithica etc. The knock offs are not so much cheaper that they would justify the huge drop in quality.
