Inexpensive method of safely storing loaded revolver

If you're referring purely to normal activities during the day, then sure, I agree with you. Gun on your person is the best thing you can do. Even then, though, I don't expect to have my wife begin carrying a handgun on her person throughout the day while she's constantly lifting/holding kids, having kids run up and grab her all the time, and changing diapers all day.

Been there, done that. It can be done. Make sure your holster has good enough retention to hang upside down on the jungle gym. Seriously. :) The first time they run into your sidearm head first (when they are tall enough) will also be one of the last times they do it. Kids learn pretty quick after banging their heads on hard metal objects.

high shelf in my bedroom closet.

Height is NOT an insurmountable challenge for a child old enough to walk. Believe me. Wait until you quietly observe from a distance as you 3 year old son attempts to move and stack objects so he can work on the ceiling fan, just like daddy. On top of the refrigerator and on top of the top shelf in the bed room closet (even if the adult bedroom is "off limits") are no longer safe places once little Jack or Jill learn to walk. Immediately after walking they acquire climbing skills comparable only to monkeys.

The $25 safe mentioned above is a good example of what you want. Don't worry about keeping it safe from theives, just keep it safe from your children until they are old enough to participate. Then teach them the 4 rules and satisfy their curiosity whenever they are inquisitive. In the eyes of a child, daddy's guns that stay hidden and locked away like dirty little secrets are tempting items...but daddy's guns that he brings out to show when asked or takes little jack/jill along to shoot with, well those are just common items that they are familiar with and they know how to act around them.

Skips a few dinners out and get a real pistol safe

No batteries required, yet the combo can be done quickly in the dark. No fumbling with keys. Your family's safety is worth it.

Some great advice about kids curiosity http://www.corneredcat.com/Disarming_Kids_Curiosity/
That is a good choice to store a couple handguns. One of the better made boxes on the market. However, I think the gun he is talking about is over 11" long. Might be a close fit if he can save a little for it. I think that box is right at 12" wide.

I've test-fit a 7 1/2" barrel Ruger Old Army in that box and it fits just barely diagonally. I think a Vaquero is the same size.

Edit: Sorry, I just re-read his post and he has a Colt, not a Ruger. I'm not sure what the dimensions are on that. Here's how to see if a gun will fit: Find out the internal dimensions of the box, then draw it on paper, then see if your gun will fit at various angles. I'd go measure the box right now but my wife and baby are asleep next to it :)

I have a Gunvault on each floor of the house and think they are great.

You don't need all the biometric lock stuff..... just the original keypad.

Midway has them on sale every other month or so for ~$80.

Super fast access...

Very secure.

Small gun safes with key-pad electronic locks cost $60-$100 around here. Medical bills cost a lot more than that. Don't hold back on safety equipment when you have kids in the house.
Yeah I got a Gunvault Multi Deluxe for $120 off of Amazon and it's been great so far.

If (when) money is an object, and you need something "right now," take a small padlock and put it around the trigger guard behind the trigger.

Now try to cock the hammer... :scrutiny:

True. My usual is a DA revolver, not SA, and I disable it with a padlock around the top strap. Handcuffs will also work.

But the advantage of a safe or lock box is it can be bolted down, so you are sure it will not migrate and neither will your weapon.

These small safes have been on the list of Christmas sales around here. If you're interested, keep your eyes open. I've seen them often for under $50.

I personally have two of these. They probably can be found cheaper on-line, but if time is important they are available at the store. I'm not saying these are the best, nor the cheapest but I can say that I have used them for over two years with zero problems. The electronic keypad is battery operated but mine are still going strong after two years. To make sure there isn't an accidental lockout there is a low battery warning and key backup. They are also pre-drilled to bolt down with hardware included. Obviously these are not meant to keep out the pros but they wonderfully keep the peanut butter and jelly fingers off.
