I'm looking in to taking a defensive rifle class comming up in July. One of the requirements for the class is that all rifles must have a sling so that you can safely transition from rifle to pistol.

I've only used a sling on a rifle once in my life firing a few rounds at a CMP Garand match. It was a traditional sling. I doubt I even used it right.

My understanding of this rifle class is that I'm going to want a tactical sling of some sort that lets the rifle drop to a comfortable low and ready position.

I have no idea how to properly use a sling, I have no idea what kind of slings are even available (1,2, and 3 point? What the heck is the difference?). It's being attached to a WASR 10 (cheap, but works for me) so I really don't want to spend a fortune on a sling. I just want somthing that will work okay and that I hopefully won't get tangled up in.

Where should I go to learn more? How does one choose the right type of sling? Does brand matter? How does one properly attach the sling? Any sage words of wisdom are appreciated.

P.S. My WASR 10 came with a crappy commie sling that I STILL have no freaking clue how I'm supposed to attach to the rifle. I'm at work now, but can post pictures of the sling attachment points on my rifle if that is necessary to answer any of my questions. Sorry about the noob post, but when it comes fighting with a rifle, I AM a noob.

Okay, this looks ideal. It's the only one that wouldn't interfere with a sidemount optic. Can someone explain why some nylon straps and a few polymer buckles warrants a $60+shipping price tag? Cost of manufacture has got to be under $6. I wish I was back in Indiana, I'd have my old neighbor sew one up.

i got a nice leather hungarian sling from www.copesdist.com. . the sling cost 3.99 and its remarkably nice. the slings are used surplus but in good condition. i wouldnt feel unprepared having it on my wasr if i needed to repel a zombie invasion or needed to fight robots from the future. Im not sure if it counts as tacticool but it works for only 4 dollars.

The "crappy" sling, if it is the leather one, is worth over $20.00 and goes on quite nicely. It took me a little time to figure it out but once you do it is much better than the $5 or $10 green cloth Chinese SKS type slings. It also beats the nylon imitations. If you look around enough you can find diagrams or photo examples on the internet detailing how to put them on. Try AK47.com.

That is the style sling I have, though mine is specifically the leather one the gentleman spoke of above.

I've got it on now, thanks to the photos in your link, thanks a million for saving my sanity (that has been bugging me from day one).

Now then, just so I'm clear this type of sling is really only used for steadying your aim and humping the gun on your back right?

There's no way to wear this thing such that I can drop the rifle and have it hang off my chest or shoulder is there? I'm pretty sure I'm going to need one of them fancy single point slings for the class.

the leather sling i have is adjustable. you could put it around your neck and put your arm through having it hang at the low ready.

I'll try to post a picture or two when I get home.

Maybe I'm just ignorant, but my leather sling seems way too short to be useful. Like it was meant for a Pigme guerilla.

You can see how I have my AK setup on this thread (scroll down just a little) with a 2-point Quick Adjust. Depending on your sling mounts, we should be able to find something that will work perfect for you.

Posting pictures of your AK and it's sling mounts would be very helpful in me helping you.

As for the purposes of different types of slings, I will explain that a little.

With a single point sling, it should be mounted near the rear of the receiver, so you may need to buy a new sling mount to install there.

Single points are used primariliy for weapon retention. They are most effective when you are in a scenario when you know you will need to have optimal maneuverability with the weapon and know you will need to use it, like for PSD, dynamic entry, needing to shoot from both shoulders (like around corners), in a vehicle, etc...

They are great for situations when they are needed most. They are not a good all purpose sling, as they do not allow the user to go hands free because if you let go of the weapon it will hang there and bounce around against you when you walk/run/climb. They simply don't provide the ability to secure the weapon to you tightly so that you can use both of your hands, whether you are running, climbing, securing prisoners, carrying wounded, etc... or anything else when you need use of both of your hands for things other than the weapon.

Single points provides weapon retention with the greatest freedom of movement with the weapon. It's likely that for a carbine class, you'll either want a single point sling, or a quick adjust 2-point.

2-points are good for going hands free, but they CAN be too restrictive... that is why a quick adjust is so useful. It almost eliminates the need for any other type of sling because it is secure when you need it to be and in an instant it can be loose and unrestrictive.

3 point slings are over complicated and have too much excess webbing. I would avoid them.

get a guitar strap, then run to home depot and get two small chain links to connect it to your AK. Voila, long, comfortable, and fashionable gun strap. Guitar straps are ultra-adjustable an can be raised up tight and high or slung low (some are long enough to even go sub-groin if you wish them too). I have one on my WASR-2. Remember that for a rock musician, the strap has to be very flexible and durable so that they can maneuver their guitar. Guitar= metal and wood. WASR= metal and wood. They weigh about the same... so go with a guitar strap... seriously...
