The box of South African .308 was so heavy (over 80 pounds) I could barely lift it but the UPS lady brought it to my back door. Part of the weight was the heavy duty, military green metal box with carrying handles and latches. One side of the box was closed with a wire embedded in a metal seal (looking somwhat like the wax document seals from days of yore.) The metal box, with gasket sealing against moisture, would protect the ammo against some very harsh blows. The ammo itself consists of seven packets of 140 rounds each (980 rounds total) securely sealed in heavy-duty plastic bags with their own built in carrying handles. To open the package, you pull off a tie on the front of the package. No moisture could get into these thoroughly sealed packs. The ammo itself comes in small boxes of 20 rounds each. The c. late 1970's/early 1980's FMJ ammo looks to be in like new condition, as one would expect from the packaging. The ammo cost $147 for 980 rounds, plus $17 for delivery (in three days) from Aim in Ohio. This seems like a good buy to me.

Yes, from Aim Surplus. My research indicated that South African .308 was good. I expect no problems from it.

Is this AIM surplus? I thought south african was one of the ones to stay away from.

Indian, not South African, is the .308 that has a bad reputation depending on who you ask.

So. African is good plinking ammo....................but with nowhere near the accuracy of Portuguese or the Aussie ADI stuff.
That wasn't a bad price for it though. :)

The Indian stuff (sometimes pedalled as British) is pure junk and even possibly dangerous - stay FAR away from it.

I ordered two cans of the Aussie ammo on Monday from Aim. Just waiting for it to arrive. If they weren't calling for snow and rain this weekend, I'd go to the range with it...if it were to show up today or tomorrow. I'm hoping for some decent weather the weekend after.

Is this SA non-corrosive? Are they as hot as the Port? I find that the Aussie is a little weak than the Port (it always shoots lower ~1" using the same sight setting, someone said this maybe due to its lighter bullet, but I don't think the differenct between 144gr. and 147gr. would have such a significant effect at 100 yds.).

Some guys said that this SA is a little dirtier than the Port and Aussie, which is not preferred feature for a gas gun like the FAL. Is that true?

Since the SA ammo was designed for use in SA-produced FAL's (the R1 and R3 variations), believe me, it won't cause any problems! I used the stuff in the bush for several years, and was very happy with its performance.

My experance with surplus 7.62 NATO ammo in a M-1a, a FAL, and a FR-8 has been really good. I like SA, Port, Hirt, Aussi, N.Z., RG, and LC. The best part is the price @ $.13-.20/round. I did buy some Indian @ $.10/round and it looked so bad I only shot some in my FR-8 and gave the rest away.

I've used RG, SA, Port, Aus, and Hirt in my STG. All I have right now is Aus, but it's pretty good. I'll order some of the SA when I have money because it is ok and the cheapest around except for Indian (aka The Devil).
