Well I have American Classic it has fed every brand of ammo I have tried Ball or HP I carry with Corbon By way mine is#78 in serial number If you want to talk to owners of the Firestorm or American Classic well I have a section for owners or these and 1911 in general They are well liked and I only know of one that was sent in for warranty and that was on another board
Come as the owners http://bersatalk.com

About 5 months ago i picked up a NIB RIA Tactical 5". it has fed ammo well, with the exception of a few ftf's, but im pretty sure that was due to using crappy kimber mags. using other mags it has run well.

After 400ish rounds down the pipe the rear sight on my tactical came loose and would slide completely out of the dovetail cut! i did a good bit of research into the quality of RIA 1911's before making my purchase so lets just say i was less than pleased...

i have since fixed the sight, but it makes me wonder if anyone else has experienced the same issue with a RIA pistol?

I compete in USPSA Single Stack with a Rock Island Armory Tactical. I've shot probably close to 15,000 rounds.

I'm not selling the gun. I highly recommend it.

I have a Firestorm by Metroarms, serial in the mid 400's. I paid less than $400.

Has it been perfect? Nope. Broke an extractor at 1500 rounds. So what? I fixed it, moved on, and it has somewhere between 3k and 4k rounds through it. It is the gun I paid the least for, and enjoy shooting the most. Other than the extractor it has been great. I haven't found a round it wont feed. It is far more accurate than I am.

I would suggest you pick one up.

I think I may have just now figured out why the folks that redicule those that did NOT pay two or three thousand for a 1911, is to try to make them selves feel better for spending too much for a 1911........
I have 21 1911's, one non-1911, all .45......if they didn't work I would get rid of it - and NONE cost like the one's these cats brag about.....
if I were making the case that you need to spend that kinda' money to get a good pistol, I would not be showing my intelligence, I would be showing my ignorance.

I have a buddy who has a Rock Island 1911. It's a fine shooter. It's a no frills gun, very close to the old GI issue style, but it works reliably. For your average shooter they are fine guns. I would, however, replace the grips. That at made of the ugliest wood I have ever seen on a gun. Yuck!

I have a respectable stable of 1911s and none are made in the Philippines or South America. That is not because they may not be decent guns, but because I want better quality and I am willing to pay for it.

I have seen and fired guns from those countries that were accurate and reliable. I've also seen and fired ones that were utter pieces of crap. That means nothing. My favorite 1911 is a Kimber, but it just HAPPENS TO BE a Kimber. It is the best I've owned in terms of accuracy and reliability. OTOH, I've shot a friend's Kimber that was so bad I recommended he send it back to the factory (the ultimate throwing up my hands at a 1911 for me).

Not including Para high caps, because they are not true 1911s, I only own one non-U.S. made 1911 and it is a Norinco. It is an amazingly good gun.

That said, at one time I did some research on the 1911 forum. Filipino and South American 1911s had the highest percentage of issue posts of any 1911s. Doesn't prove a thing because 1911s that sell for under $500 are going to sell more guns than 1911s that sell for more than $500.

I've been shooting IDPA since 1998 and have been an RO since 2001. That experience has put me in a position to make some judgment calls. Springfields fail about seven or eight more times as often as all other makes combined. No. 2 in firing line failures is Glock. No. 3 is all makes of 1911 combined. No. 4 is Filipino guns of all types.

This, too, does not mean much. Springers outnumber all other makes at matches. Glocks are the second most popular gun. 1911s are the most popular model. Filipino guns are most popular among new shooters and shooters on a budget.

Catastrophic failures (IOW, take your broken gun and go home; You're done for the day) are more significant. Springers still hold the edge, but a third to half the guns at a match tend to be Springers so judgment is questionable. But, Filipino guns run a relatively close second, followed by 1911s of all makes. However, even S&W revolvers have been subject to catastrophic failures so...

I have never sent a high-end 1911 home for a catastrophic failure. I have booted many Filipinos, Tauruses, Springers, hybrids and even one Kimber home. I've never sent an Ed Brown, a Wilson, a Caspian or even a Fusion, home.

Failures that require the gun to be broken down or tools to return to service are another category, but most of them come down to poor reloads.

Many people are very happy with their Filipino and South American guns. I have no argument with them. Some are actually very accurate and reliable. However, what is posted on the Internet is unreliable. Show us one great group on the Net and we have no way of knowing if it is one of 100 groups or the first one shot. Or, at what range or from a rest or even a Ransom rest. We have to take the word of someone who will never, ever have to prove it is the truth.

I doubt the word of anyone who says they use factory ammo and posts great groups. Factory ammo sucks (a whole 'nother subject). I will say this, I don't know anyone I consider a good shot who shoots factory ammo routinely.

As to Filipino guns (and South American guns), they are decent budget guns. You have a reasonable chance of getting one that is accurate and reliable and will hold up to a lifetime of use. I consider "a reasonable chance" as something approaching 50 percent.

I could care less what you buy or choose to shoot. It ain't my gun.

I will say this - my wife won't let me buy a gun made in South America or the Philippines. (We do have one SA gun; a Rossi .22 that is on hold and getting ready to be the "first gun" of a second generation of my offspring.) I recently asked her about ordering a high end 1911 and she said "Can we afford it? Get it." She won't risk getting a piece of junk from the Philippines for $500, but she'll OK $3,000 for something she is sure will meet our standards in a heartbeat.

I will relate the essence of a, well, a fight, we had. I wanted to buy an RI with all the bells and whistles. She asked me if I would trust it with my life fresh out of the box. My answer was no. She asked if I would trust a Wilson fresh out of the box, I told her after I'd fired a few 100 rounds. She asked how many rounds it would take for me to trust my kid's life to the RI. I thought a while and said "At least 1,000."

She told me to save up and buy another Wilson. She's right.

A good woman is hard to find. A smart good woman is rare. About as rare as a good Filipino gun...

Your best idea?

Listen to the people who own (or have owned) the firearms in question. They are probably the ones whose opinions matter.

I've owned two RIA GI models. They're good solid reliable weapons.

Armscor?

Okay, so what a lot of you guys are saying is that the ARMSCOR -based products are generally pretty good? I know there's a lot of opinions, and I do prefer pre-WWII Colts myself, but if I had the cash to put down on another M1911 (type) I'd want to go with a forged frame made to tight tolerances. Any views on how ARMSCOR products stack up against the Taurus?

Can you handle "the truth"?;)

Read about it here:

Hey, maybe it was a fluke, a one in a million anamoly, but I read the review, took the risk and bought one.

Here's my fourth or fifth magazine thru an out-of-the-box filipino 1911 last Saturday

Honest, injun:)

I don't have anything against the Rock Islands and I would probably get one if that was all I could afford. However, I had a conversation a few months back that made me think. I was born in the Philippines, but I've lived here almost my entire life. My uncle came here for my wedding this past May. After dinner one night the conversation turned to guns. He asked me if I had any and I replied of course as I'm red-blooded American. I then asked him if he had any and he said he only had a couple, an AR and a 1911, both Colts. I asked him why he didn't own an Armscor instead as I had read good things about their 1911s. They're cheaper and more available over there than Colts. (Aside - the exchange rate between the dollar and the Philippine peso is just horrendous. I shudder to think how long he had to save up for his Colt) He told me that Armscor guns are serviceable but they have a poor reputation in the Philippines compared to Colts. As a result those who could afford it opted for Colt instead. Made perfect sense to me.

I love it when these guys go on and on comparing Rocks to Wilsons and in the end they have no real personal experiences with the firearm in question. Most often the ones down talking a pistol have never shot one of which they speak of. I will say this, from my experience there are more happy owners of RIA's than Kimbers.

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm still rolling over LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!! On a more serious note though, Loop, sounds you got a real keeper of a woman there. You better hold on to her. That sort of wisdom and intelligence is a hard find these days.:)

My only experience with a phillipino 1911 was a SAM commander clone I got as part of a trade. It seemed very well finished and tight, and it shot perfectly...100% reliable and very accurate. SAM was (is?) imported by Century.

Hi all I just bought my first Armscor 1911 [ first 1911] and I have a couple of questions. reading the directions, yes directions, and it read to remove the barrel bushing to remove slide, but there is no bushing just the single guide rod.

I have managed to remove the slide, rod, plug and barrel for cleaning. I have reassembled the slide and put it back on the frame and it seems to funtion correctly.

So my questions is why no barrel bushing and should I be calling the place of purchase for information, and would it be save to fire in this condition.

Thanks in advance, penny

I have heard some scary stuff about new Taurus and my son had one of the compact fiber framed .45s that dropped pieces out of the mag with less than 50 rounds out. Warranty shop has had it over 2 weeks and says they expect to look at it soon but will take at least a month to repair.

Not sure if the quality problem goes over to larger guns but warranty service sure sucks.

I recently did some trading and got a RIA GI .38 Super. It is a surprisingly nice gun - tighter, more accurate and more reliable (100%), than I ever expected. I replaced the grips and changed out the GI style sights for a set of Fusion 3 dots and it is now exactly what I was looking for in a 1911 - simple, rugged, and reliable - and I don't have to fret over it getting scratched or roughed up.

Plus it gets a thumbs up from my Dad, who is 71 and retired from the Army and Coast Guard. In his opinion there is only one "real" pistol, the 1911, and this gun shoots as well as any he's handled and has the right "feel". After shooting it, taking it apart and looking everything over, he said, and I quote, "Now this is a gun! You can take a gun like this, smack somebody upside the head with it and keep on shooting". You can't argue with that kind of praise.:D
