I think children are naturally grounded and have strong souls. This is why most children will love animals and hate death and killing. It is after years of exposure to our violent culture and media that they loose this connection to the greater wisdom. I will teach my children to shoot when the are old enough but never to hunt unless needed.

Vegetables have rights, too! :p

My 18 month old son loves animals . He's learned the sounds made by all of his toy animals (though he had to invent a sound for the giraffe) and plays with them for hours.

A couple weeks ago my wife and I watched him make his lion and tiger attack the other animals (he had them going right for the throat too). Nobody had ever taught him about predators and prey, but he seemed to have a natural understanding.

When he's served a piece of chicken, he enjoys holding it up and saying "cluck cluck cluck" and then devouring it.

He loves animals and understands that death and killing is part of the natural order of things too. He hasn't been exposed to much violent culture or media either.

At one point the young girl saw the rack of guns against the wall and stated "mommy I don't like guns". The mother responded "why not?". "Because they'll hurt me".

Sad. Very sad.

However, the mom responded well though. That child needs to receive a real education at home. Maybe her parents will teach her not to trust everything she is taught in school. Some things are knowledge, other things are pure bullsh*t. She must learn how to distinguish from these two, because sometimes, bullsh*t is coated with candy and chocolate to make it seem sweeter and more appetizing.

PETA member: "do you know what they DO to those poor cows?!"
me: "No, but it's delicious."

but seriously, I'm happy to hear that this mother had the sense of mind to straighten this out! Maybe the little girl will go tell her friends the truth?
