Yesterday I was in a LGS in southern Utah. First time there since the big run on everything. I was amazed about the low inventory. even used guns were scarce. The clerk told me a couple of things the got my attention.........#1 AR's will be back in stock very soon and #2........this bothers me a bunch, a lot of the local PD go in this shop, he claims the local PD have informed them that they (PD) have a list of all gun owners in their jurisdiction. How could they come up with such a list?

That is disturbing. I don't know how they can go about it legally though, not that legalities have stopped municipalities in the past either though. What kind of state or city law would allow it in that area?

First off, our LGS is still getting AR's in regularly, they are just selling within hours.

Secondly, I know some LGS will willingly give information to LE without cause or reason. LE can look at your books (an FFL), but to require you to allow them to make copies they must have a warrant to my knowledge. However some shops simply let them do what they want so as not to incur their wrath. So Joe Blow might say ya take whatever information you want local officers, while his competitor will say, 'you're allowed to look but if you want to force me to let you make copies (or a list) you need warrants on each individual.'

Either they mean they have a list of all concealed carry holders in the jurisdiction (most likely) or they have coerced the dealers to provide sales information in violation of both state and federal law (least likely)

I don't put it past the local government to attempt to acquire this info though.

Case in point, a local councilman requested access to purchase records at a LGS near me, specifically to see what the local PD chief was paying for products and the LGS owner told him to pound sand. To say he wasn't happy was an understatement. That same city council attempted to perform an inventory of another LGS to see if they were in compliance with a local ordnance regarding the ratio of new vs. used firearms and requested access to the LGS safe. That request was denied with the statement, "the only government agency that will ever see the inside of my safe is the BATF, have a nice day".

Local governments are notoriously corrupt and power hungry, you have to know when to tell them no and sadly, some FFL's may find it easier to comply then deal with the harassment.

When I first read the OP I thought it said LDS has a record of all gun owners. That sounds about right. No offense.

The gun shop was just stoking paranoia and panic. This serves its purposes perfectly. Take anything you hear in a LGS with a grain of salt.

I could care less if my local PD knows I have guns. I have about a dozen or so cop friends, not that that matters, just sayin.

Why would the police tell a saleman that would then relay that info to some random customer?

I doubt you have anything to worry about in Utah.

First of all, the LDS church doesn't give a rat's hiney about guns.

Second of all, no they don't. Even if THAT store gave over all of their records, he's just THAT dealer. When I lived down there, my dad had over a dozen guns that weren't on record with anyone anywhere. They don't have any more clue about people's guns than any other LE agency. And even if they did, state law forbids the confiscation of arms even during a time of emergency. Either the cop or the seller was talking big.
