I've been seeing these rifles for sale on several websites over the last few months, but had never seen pictures or video of them in actual use (although obviously the Hungarians use them).
But I did find this pic on the USMC website:

The marines are helping to train the Afghan National Police, and the Afghanis are being issued new AMD-65's.

Like I said, just a little well-ain't-that-interesting sort of thing.

I've been eye-balling these things lately myself, thinking maybe i need a Hungarian in my stable ! Both AIM and classicarms have them in stock for under $500. Anyone have any good info on these things ? Are they Century builds ?

Very hard to 'speed load ' one with the forward grip position they have and the wire stock is rather uncomfortable.

The ones at Atlantic are NOT new Century builds. Maybe TGI builds on DCI receivers?

An AMD-65 is on my 'maybe' list, but I can't help but think the double pistol grips & wire stock looks uncomfortable as heck for range time.

These were designed to be compact for tanker crews and had slightly shorter (14.5"?) barrels in the original format before the US barrels were installed.

Yeah, Atlantics' website states that theirs aren't Century builds, but does anyone know about the Centerfire and AIM versions ? ( I gotta remember to call them tomorrow and ask). And i agree, they'll take a little gettin' used to, but i've become an AK fan the past couple years, and i don't have a Hungarian, plus, i think they look kinda cool !!

The one I got from Centrfire is a TGI build. Haven't got to shoot it yet. Good luck.

The front grip is just like the rear, pistol grip nut mounts in a hole in the front handguard. I really need to finish my AMD-65 and get to work on the other Hybrid AMD/RomyG.

I personally can't stand the way it feels. It would feel better to me if the front pistol grip were angled towards me, like the rear one.

You could turn it around if you wanted, about a 3 minute job. The pistol grip nut goes in at an angle to match the pistol grip so the screw goes straight in.

It seems like a poor choice for general issue.
As has been noted, they're harder to reload fast and are the reason for the Hungarian 20 round magazines. Getting a 30 rounder in with them is tricky.
The wire stock is not all that comfortable either.

Makes me wonder why they wouldn't just issue regular fixed stock AK's and be done with it.

Its not general issue.....just depends on where you are and whats available. For example the IP (Iraqi Police) in the Fallujah area turned in all of their AKs (junkers and variuos types) and were issued new condition Vz58Ps fresh from rebuild. Soon all of the IA (Iraqi Army) will be equipped with the M16A4/M4 platform.

I think they are nice, good receivers, dimpled mag wells, nice front section from the muzzle back to the front site post, a few other goodies here and there...

I built one from a parts kit when they were cheap. I feel it is one of the best CQB weapons I own. The forward grip dosn't really interfere with the 30 round mag, and I like the stock...nice and compact, yet swings open easily and locks up tight.
You don't use cheek-weld with this design, more of a heads up sight, which is fine for CQB.
With the stock folded, it is very compact, and the forward grip gives great control, mimicing the currently popular vertical fore grips on the M4.
With the 7.62x39, you have alot of capability in a very compact package, almost as small as most AK pistols.

I just got back from a Store here. He had one with Wood ForGrip, Wood Pistol Grip, and Folder. But He wanted 877 for it, is this over Priced?
If so How much Over?

Our next batch of Incoming AMD 65 rifles will be Hungarian built on Hungarian FEG receivers , we expect to see tem in the next 2 -3 weeks.

I used one of the cheap kits as the base for a pistol build on a home built receiver back when Centerfire Systems had the parts sets for cheap. One of the most fun to shoot guns I own.

65's

I also picked up a couple of kits when they were cheap a few years ago....$50/60. Very well made and quite accurate...The wooden grips are much less annoying than the plastic when changing magazines. Once I got used to shooting in the raised head fashion I really began to appreciate them... more like firing a long two-handed pistol.

Atlantic,

How much are you projecting the new ones will go for? I am in the market, but Peach State almost has me on theirs. I might stay put for a legit Hungarian receiver, but I'd like to know some details.
