I am curious about something being a semiauto type of a guy. Lets say you had two equally skilled shooters shooting at a target 100 yards away from a KNEELING position (not from a bench):

- One is shooting a bolt action hunting rifle in 30-06 with a 3x9 scope.
- The other is shooting a M1 Garand

Who shoots the tighter groups? How close is it?

I am interested in the difference in the real world without benches and chairs.

Way, WAY too many variables.

If we're talking top of the pops stuff (i.e., match-grade ammo, a superb accurized M1 Garand with NM-type peep sights, and an expensive bolt action with expensive scope), I'm guessing the bolt-action will have a slight advantage, if only because the bolt action itself is very slightly more consistent from shot to shot.

It also depends a lot on the shooter. I have pretty bad eyes, so irons are hard for me to use - scopes are quicker and more accurate for me.
