<This thread topic is entirely Plagerized from Thumpers on "overweight" people>

Not trying to step on anybody's toes here...

I've noticed from Mirrors and pictures of some of our tactical posters are...just...well...

Weaklings, myself included.

It seems that many here focus on the tools of personal defence and seem to neglect the (arguably more important) physical aspects of "what if." Gunwriters seem to have the same problem.

Are we sometimes too equipment conscious in our efforts?

What do you folks think?

In embracing all things Tactical, I took an Edged Weapons and close quarter combat course that really taught me something. I'm quite weak.
If I were to get in an actual scrape I'd have my kiester handed to me unless I had a firearm and they were 15 ft away, not the most likely scenario.

Has anyone else had similar thoughts?

Now I'm starting to get stronger by daily physical exercise, but I wonder, am I the only 'tactical' weakling? Or are their more people out there who fancy themselves as decent pistoleros but have issues doing more than a few pullups.

BTW here is a picture of me being weak:

Few more minutes of that and my arm would be really tired.

Do you have to run around in the shower just to get wet ???:D
Is your neck bigger than your thigh ? :D
When you wear khaki pants, do dogs try to hike their leg on you ?
Can you chug the "Joe Wieder weight gain formula" yet nothing happens?

Please, nobody get offended at this post. We all have differences that make us unique.

We are products of our environment to a great extent. When we have a problem, we try to find equipment (hardware) solutions for attitude (software) problems. Thus we buy new guns rather than take a course to learn to use the guns we have. It's the American way!
Also, way too many of us think that sitting in front of a computer screen all day is "work".

atek3,

Those pants are either too small or your shorts are too long!

I can do a bunch of pushups and pullups...mainly becuase I don't weigh much.

120lbs isn't light...if someone dropped a 120lb bowling ball on your head, you wouldn't be very happy!!! :D :D :D :neener:

Seriuosly though I try working out w/ my M1A to strengthen my capbusting muscles.

Lots of laughs on this thread, and lots of truth, too. I'd shoot better if I were in the shape I was in when I was 32. Twenty years makes a big difference.

I tried weightlifting and only succeeded in damaging both rotator cuffs and pinching a nerve in my elbow. Overexerting myself last December left me with a herniated disc in my back.

So, I now ascribe to Winston Churchill's philosophy: "Whenever I get the urge to exercise, I lie down until it passes."

The thing about me and running is, if you see me running, run too - 'cuz something is chasing me and it's more than I can deal with :p.

This is too funny. Little people vs. Big people on THR! I can see this gettin' ugly.

By the way, winstonsmith, did you ever go shooting with that guy who offered to take you on the "Who has no guns" thread?

Well heck, I feel left out !!

48 y/o male here I weight what I'm supposed to. I eat anything I want, have low BP and no cholesteral problems and all that jazz. A bit out of shape, but it's my fault, don't execise like I should with schedule...but I walk alot and tote a backpack. Being middle aged ( got an excuse use it right?) I have a "cute" little paunch ( her words). I went back to smoking but don't drink. I CCW but I have proven I can still take care of myself...so far...includes the tennis shoe shuffle. Have had dbl knee surgery ( rowdy young 'un) but no problems ( other than predicting rain)...some other minor stuff like appy, and anaphalactic shock. ( aspirin).

I tend to eat healthy, fruits veggies, bake, broiled, little fried food. I have no qualms about eating a fried juicy cheesburger, fries and shake...or Mexican. I just use common sense.

To heck with you people...I'm gonna eat another honey bun...that's 3 for breakfast for me. I feel left out -so there.
:neener:

atek3, just looking at your shooting stance makes my back hurt!

Lean forward, a bit, and bring that left hand farther back.

If you get a bar bell set with just 50 pounds of weight, that's all you need to get in great shape. Work three times a week for maybe 15 or 20 minutes a session. Work up to 20 repetitions for the exercises in the book. You'll build endurance, not bulges. Curls, presses, medium knee bends, toe lifts, shrugs, wrist curls...

Thats exactly what I use, albeit more reps. Who needs to be big? Just toned and 'sleeper strong'.

Eating lots of Garlic builds endurance for weight training, and builds the immune system too.

(chew a sprig of fresh parsely to get rid of the garlic breath,)

Who needs weights? He's got an FN FAL, just dry fire it 20 min. a day, and carry it with you whenever you can. Ever see the old (WWII) "daily dozen" exercises with a rifle?

Watch some of the old movies and G.I. training films. You start with feet shoulder width apart, with you M1 held in both hands shoulder width apart over your head. Then there was a series of flexability moves, side to side, bend to the front, hold the rifle at full extension to the front, etc. I never did them, although in my ROTC Honor Society (Pershing Rifles), we did do pushups on our knuckles while holding our rifles (OUCH!).

This builds muscles, increases flexability, and also helps you "bond" with your rifle.

I'm unable to get big.

When I used to lift weights and run alot I gained maybe 5 lbs and got significantly stronger (I could bench 118% of my body weight), but I just can't get big.

Now that I've slacked, and discovered some fine dark beers, I have gained some weight...weight that is not IWB friendly.

Being a featherweight has it's advantages. Ever notice that St. bernards and St. bernard sized people are generally friendly? They don't have to be mean, they know they can crush anything that bothers them. Only dog that ever bit me was a Daschund.

When I left high school I was 140lbs on a 6'1" frame. Now it's 210 on the same frame and trying to get to 225-230 in a healthy manner. I never left behind the attitude of the undersized kid in kindergarten though. You get picked on enough and you get mean until no one picks on you.

*Timewarp '03*
Or you run away, cry, then sue the school system for allowing people to pick on you, the Hasbro Corp. for making the lunchbox the other kids hit you with, and of course God because when you fell down the ground was hard. Finally you sue your parents for having bad genes that made you small. Ah, but I digress. Think I'll take a Ritalin and a nap. *

I can see into the mindset of smaller people having been one and it is important to understand that there is always a percieved disparity of force there. Basically as stated in the other thread a smaller person will shoot sooner because they feel they have less options. Understanding that and training more is crucial if you are a small person or like to pick on midgets.

Now if you are just thin, pale, and meager looking you have no excuse. Put down the gun rag, take some ammo money and buy yourself some food. Exercise.

I won't say I was necessarily the definition of "Skinny" when I wuz a kid, but I had to spin around three times to make a shadow. I could turn sideways and stick out my tongue and be disguised as a zipper.

That reminds me of a quote...Ummm, Heinlein?

"Never frighten a little man. He'll kill you."

Disparity of force may be a wives tale in this day & age. Skinney little black belts, Professional blade men, how can you tell?:uhoh:

I give little guys just as much respect and caution as big guys, size really don't mean everything. Big guys go can go down just as fast as anyone else, and the little guy may just suprise you too sooo..careful.
