I am in the process of putting a fine, Tung oil finish on a stock, and was wondering wich is finer, 0000 steel wool, or 320 grit wet/dry sandpaper? Thanks Guys-
sandpaper and steel wool are two different things .Sandpaper - the larger the number the smaller the grit size. 320 is coarser than 400. ..Steel wool - O is coarser than OOOO. 'Wool' is also available made from bronze or stainless steel.
They act differently, but perhaps 320 is more like OO wool. Gunsmiths usually don't use wool on bare wood since bits of wool get into the wood and may rust. That's why I mentioned bronze and SS wool. I don't use wool on finish either. Fine wool and oil will remove light rust from a gun. Fine paper ,600 ,with water removes the gloss from Brownings !!!
