Is Gander Mountain lowering prices?

GM has a store just up I45 from me. Started pretty good, nothing to hyperventilate about, by OK. Soon the selection narrowed. "Wasn't selling well here, moved (particular merchandise) to ........". I haven't been there in some months. No reason to. What little variety they have is grossly overpriced. Point out that you can get bullets, powder, primers, whatever, way cheaper up the road they would just look at you and blink. More often that not, a real PITA to get employees to stop BSing long enough to field a question and, more often than not, had no idea what I would be talking about. I just avoid the frustration now, but may sneak back in to see if there has been a change. I don't recall felling the earth shake, though.
I have had a sneaky feeling for some time that this particular store may be a tax write-off and they have no incentive to be competitive.

The two GM stores in the Indy are continue to be the laugh of the firearms buying public!!!!! I can't imagine how they stay in business...

The Lansing and Grand Rapids stores do seem to have decent prices. (Especially the Grand Rapids store!)

Sometimes you do have to play one off the other.....find out what each has....etc. I recently found and bought a used XD 9 from the GR store. For some reason it had been sitting around for a couple of years and hadn't moved. (It was priced to high of course........) Well, it had Trijicon night sights installed....and looked like it had less than a few hundred rounds through it.....if that. I made an offer (now I wish I'd offered less.....) and it was accepted.

The gun is flawless and shoots like a dream. I think you just have to watch carefully and be willing to dicker a bit. Most times, I find them to be higher priced....but once in awhile........:)

Was at Gander Mtn this past weekend (Coldwater, MI). Was browsing, needed a few reloading supplies and wanted a bi-pod for the chuck gun to replace the pesky sand bags.

Basic 9 - 13" swivel stud attaching bi-pod, $59.99 + 6% tax. Bought it and off I went... Had to grab some groceries so a quick stop across the street at Walmart. Wandered through what is left of a sporting goods section and lo and behold the SAME EXACT bi-pod... who would have ever thought Wally World would have bi-pods. Anywho... same make and model number... price... $39.97 + 6% tax.

So doing the math real quickly.. wow just a hair over 33%, more by the time you pay the divergence in sales tax... Needless to say I returned Gander's piece and bought more reloading supplies with the $20 I got back.

Had this been a mom and pop store rather than a chain store I really could have cared a less that they were more, but unfortunately, not many well stocked independents in this area worth visiting.

Gander is way out in left field on a lot of their prices... IMHO anyway.

From my limited experience with one Sportsman's Warehouse and one Gander, I don't see how any Gander could survive within a hundred miles of the competition from SW. I just wish Sportsman's would expand as Gander has done.

Don't know if it's nationwide, but the one in Taylor, MI has price matching. (They need it with the quote for the G29:uhoh:)

BTW, Northern Lights, what do you have in the way of gun shops up there. As I see, you are Hell and gone from Lansing and Gr Rapids. I have relatives from St. Ignace to Gladstone and to tell the truth, I've never seen a gun shop.

Ya....the closest place I know of is the Gander Mountain in Marquette. I don't get up that way much.

There is a very nice "mom and pop" place over at Sault St. Marie....(can't think of the name right now though).

I work for the State and have to go to Lansing once a month or so....(yuck).....so I get to see some of the different stores. Jays in Gaylord and Clair are also over priced at times....so one just has to watch.....compare....and jump when you find what you want for a good price.

I read that the Sportsman's Warehouse in The Detroit burbs, that has been open just about 8 months, closed recently...

Speaking of UP sporting goods places... There was a small mom N pop place right on US 2 in Garden as of 2 years ago. Didn't make it to deer camp in Iron River last year so I am not sure if it is still there.

had a Sportsmans warehouse about 10 miles north of me. Cabelas moved in 5 miles north of me......notice i say had an SW?.....they closed in Feb after Cabelas had been open 1 year......good news for me....i sangged an XD45 Tactical for 15% off during their going out of business sale, also found great deals on knives and LEd flashlights etc. kinda went a bit overboad on their sale....but heck....not like the stuff is going to spoil!!!

I haven't been to my GM lately.....but ammo prices have been high for a long time....but there are occasional gems in there.....found a supply of .223 ammo, brass (not steel) cases for about $4.00 a box not long ago. Bought all of it. A week later, Wolf .223 is $7 a box, when you can find it in stock at all.

have found some good gun deals in the past, Steyr M9 for $300 about 6 years ago. a few good used guns have been spotted.

Our local GM is outrageously expensive across the board on everything, and to top it off, all but one employee there are epic jackasses.

When Gander Mountain first opened here, I bought a few handguns from them. Especially their used guns had good prices if you knew what to look for. The last few years I haven't even been in except for time when my wife was having rehab across the street and I killed some time there. It was a lot better than reading McCall's magazine in the doctors waiting room.

I just received an email from Gander Mtn announcing the opening of their new ONLINE store......... www.gandermtn.com

Let's all peruse it, compare prices w/ in-store items as well as competitor stores and report back to this thread, yes?

I, for one, am curious to learn if their prices are reduced online.

Here's a bonus if anyone is interested....

I don't seem to see firearms listed on the website, which I figured, but it's still disappointing.

GM will be be bought out or go bankrupt unless the current mgt. is replaced SOON by someone who knows how to move product rather than trying to rely on the hope that ignorat buyers will pay the high mark ups. They are running there business as if they had a monopoly on sporting goods. They think that they will be saved by a new website. Sorry GM, but this is not 1999...

Stock levels dropping?

I go by our local GM about once a week, just in case they decide to put a gun on special, or in case they get in a used gun that I might want. I have found a few deals over the years, but not what you would expect from a major retailer.
I have noticed that their stock levels are much lower on hand guns than they used to be a couple of years ago. I thought it was just this store, but I checked two other stores and their levels are a lot lower too. Anyone else notice this?

The only deals I have ever found at GM have been for used guns. I wasn't really getting the deal of the century then, but at least they threw in some shells.

Typically, I give most of my optics business to Opticsplanet.com, some to MidwayUSA. I briefly checked a few items on GM's new website and they are inline w/ their pricing compared Optics Planet and MidwayUSA.
