My wifes family is from Iowa and we love it up there whenever we go visit. Weve considered moving up there in the future and I was wondering about their gun laws, specifically NFA as I own an SBR and a suppressor. Can anyone from IA chime in and let me know what the general public view of firearms is?

i live right in the center of iowa and the general feeling of almost everyone is it's good to own firearms...... there are a few true believers that think a gun is a bad thing to have around but that is a very small minority................. COME TO IOWA AND BRING YOUR SHOOTING AND RELOADING GEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, according to that website a Joe Nobody basically cant own or posess an NFA item. I wonder if retired military would fall into this :

2. Any member of the armed forces of the United States or of the national guard.

3. Any person in the service of the United States.

Unfortunately the answer to your question is quick and simple....... no - NFA, SBR, Class III, suppressors are all no go. :(
On the bright side we just passed one of the best Shall issue laws in the nation last year and we're not stopping there.

i live right in the center of all those towns..... so. of ft dodge....... that little mexican rest. just south of the tracks (almost on the rails) in carroll is one of my favorite places to eat.......... volquartsen's customs is in carroll too.....had my 1022 custom there a couple of times for parts and work and they are tops for .22 rimfire work!!* my late son lived in boone for a while and it's a beautiful little town to visit....... all the towns you mentioned are about 40 mins from here.........................................

I saw on the internet that Volquartsen is in Carrol. I must have driven by there a hundred times last week when we were there and never knew it. Im a HUGE 22 advocate as well. And your talking about Taco Johns! The best drive through mexican in the world.

nope jeffery the place i like is a sit down and they bring ya chips and salsa... it's off on a side road and it's almost on the railroad tracks... it must be josie's i guess... just saw it one time when i took my 1022 over to volqaurtsen's once and try to go there when ever i'm close...... scott v. has always been good to me when i have the 1022 custom altered some more.... i had met tom volqaurtsen a long time ago and scott is the same easy to talk to type as tom.... i think tom must be scott's dad...

I moved from Iowa after living there all my life. This is the first time I have ever lived out of the state.

Couldn't be happier. High tax low wage state. Rapidly falling into debt, behaving like California the last few years.. Life long friend of mine is a State Senator I hear about it all the time he can't get anything done, not enough votes.

Gun laws are a crap shoot. Nothing over .50 cal (except muzzleloader). No SBR. No automatic weapons. No AOWs. No suppressors. The shall issue was "kind of" a big deal. Relatively few restrictions on concealed carry, I had a permit there for 17+ years. The shall issue was passed mostly by a very desperate Democratic controlled legislature and governor. My impression was they wanted to do something to stop the political bleeding. Most counties were already shall issue in practice, but a number of "metro" counties were not. I think the bigger part of that law is that for the first time Iowa will have some reciprocity with other states. Currently they recognize no out of state permits. Thats kinda of an Iowa thing, they just know better than everyone else. To be fair some parts of the state are better than others, where I was at was very difficult to live. More than just the weather.

One upside is if you like deer hunting we grew them like oversized rats, they had an endless food supply any where in the state. Please hunt them. I will have to go back there occassionally they are vehicle wrecking machines!

no. shotgun barrels must be 18" long, rifle barrels must be 16", no supressors, no full auto.

really sucks because, while i would most likely never own any full auto due to cost, i would love to have some silencers. im thinking a silenced .22 rifle and the squirrels wont even know anything is wrong! i dont see why the govt. thinks that devices that protect your hearing are a bad thing:banghead:
